So I guess repainting the hood is the only thing I can do now?!?

Well, I bought a used black 2000 year car. It had a lot of stone chips on it so I thought I would try the technique on here. After a lot of work it looked much better. I used 2000 grit sandpaper by hand for wet sanding. However, it still did not entirely match. I thought about trying clear coat.

I applied the clear coat and wet sanded again with 2000 grit. Well, it seemed to make a difference. However, there is now a grey spot just above the original chip. It cannot be removed with rubbing compound or SMR. I fear I have sanded through the paint into the primer underneath. So I think I have just fixed one spot but caused another. It is right on a curve so I think the raised area of the car got sanded more due to me using a sanding block.

So, I suppose the only thing I can do now is have the hood repainted. Anyone know how much that typically cost? It's not a real expensive car and it is a daily driver but I just want it to look nice.

Anybody have any recommendations in DFW, TX? Any alternatives? I cannot really "fill" the spot since it is smooth and is not a chip. I could touch-up paint it but I fear if I wet sand it again I will just cause more problems.

I had my hood redone but it was part of a repaint so I don't know the $$ and yes ,, very happy .. you can't tell it was done.

I just got an estimate from an I-car gold-class place here, Herb's paint and body.

$475, Ouch!

I called my insurance agency (USAA) just to check. They said that the policy is a per-occurance policy. So, if I had five rock chips on the hood, unless I could prove they all happened at once, I would be charged a seperate deductable for each one. That seems insane to me since the work is the same for one or for five, the hood is repainted. He suggested I pay for it myself. Insurance sucks. I have had no accidents and now that I ask for a little thing I get this.

What your deductable ? I had that happen to me .. the body shop said reparing 1 chip or 10 is all the same.. The chip repair makes up very little of the hood repaint costs. Claim for one chip and the shop isn't going to paint the hood and leave 4 chips untouched.

It is $250. So I would save half if I used my insurance. I guess I could try.

There is also a guy here that is part of "Aero Colours". They use a air brush and "panel blend" and fill the chips and damaged areas. He would charge $230 for the touch-up and repair. He said though that it wouldn't be as good as a full repaint

Nope, they denied my claim. They (USAA) said something about if I drove down a road that had rocks on it then it was my fault.

They did say however that they would place the denied claim in my file and that it may affect my insurance in the future even though they paid nothing.

Bastards! I hate insurance companies. I may have to look into a different company in the future. I have had them since 1991 and they treat me like this. :angry

Looks like the $230 airbrush "blend" may be the best bet.
