smart (not so common to USA :P )

Roger Penske has a distribution deal in place to sell the cars through his dealer network. The cars are very crashworthy and they DO NOT GET 72 MPG.

A few cars have been previously mported and converted to meet EPA/DOT standards, but not through official channels.

DaimlerChrysler to launch 52 mpg Smart Car in United States by 2008

Printable version Key concepts: United States, Smart Car and natural health.

(NewsTarget) DaimlerChrysler AG is attempting to capitalize on the demand for fuel-efficient cars by selling its two-seat Smart ForTwo car in the United States.

The move is an effort to stem the losses from the Smart division that have marked the past eight years. CEO Dieter Zetsche has said the division will post a profit next year, and hopes the 2008 generation of Smart ForTwo will be the answer, as U.S. buyers scramble for fuel-efficient cars due to the cost of gas lingering around the $3 per gallon mark.

During a news conference in Detroit, Zetsche said, "The time has never been better for this, and I am convinced that the Smart ForTwo, as an innovative, ecological and agile city car, will soon become just as familiar a sight on the streets of New York, Miami or Seattle as it is today in Rome, Berlin or Paris."

The vehicle is slightly more than 8 feet long, 5 feet high and weighs around 1,600 pounds. The Smart ForTwo comes standard with a 50 horsepower gasoline engine that gets an estimated 52 miles per gallon, and is expected to cost less than $15,000.

However, a number of obstacles still stand it its way, including consumer demand for price incentives, and the current exchange rate. The vehicle will also need to be imported from its point of manufacture in Hambach, France, which will drive up the cost.

Cool little car but I'm not sure how well it would hold up in an accident with a full sized SUV. :nervous2:

The paint looks really good! :)

[quote name='Bence']Yep, exactly what I am talking about.

But the ForFour is discontinued just as the Coupé and the Roadster. Only the ForTwo will march on...

Good news for the Coupé/Roadster lovers: AC took over the entire production of these models and will manufacture a significantly better looking spinoff, called Ace.

Do a little research on Alan Lubinsky and his company, AC Cars. Nothing will be produced.

Hi

Was that 60MPG US gallons??

Here in the UK they were popular for a while many have little dump valves fitted to the tiny turbo charged engines!!

The Smart looks good!! An intreating Daimler Chysler - Mitsubishi creation.

I saw a ton of these in Canada when we went to Niagara Falls last year. Was neat seeing something you don't see here in the US just a stone's throw away.

It's like the MINI Cooper's, they also have a VERY stiff body/chassis. I remember a past video where the Mini did better than a full size Ford pickup in a 40 mph crash. Amazing stuff what technology and engineering can do.

Ford....."We build BIG, We tough"

Mini/Smart..."We build Smart, We tougher" ;)

I have a mathematical forula to show why the Smart cars never took off here in America...

(Hummer + Smart) x Intersection = Death

It looks good though.

The paint on that 'car' looks great. Definetly unique, and no, we have none of those over here in the U.S.

How safe is that thing? :soscared:

The Smart ForTwo has been sold here in Canada for a few years now. There are *lots* here in Victoria.

You guys might be interested in this crash test video:

STG, as I know, the rumor about the discontinuation of AC is more than a year old. The Smart/AC deal is relatively new, but we don't know the eventual outcome.

Word. If you live in a major city it's definitely a great consideration.

not in this city. we'll chew it up and spit it out. I can just see the new yellow pin stripe job on it from the cabbies here, not to mention the pot holes that will eat it whole.

cute though, would be fun to tool around in up at my mother's place.

We have Hummers in Canada, and Smart's; doesn't seem to be a problem.

Google Alan Lubinsky. I think the State of Conneticut wants to find him!

Can you spell scam-artist?

When they built this car do you think they thought about crashes??

Of course they did, the vehical is designed in smiliar way to an F1 car. Even though the exterior materials are light weight the driver and passanger sit inside a protective cage.

So often the case on the things like large trucks is parts of the truck enters tje cabin when a crash takes places injuring those inside. In some cars you get high parts on the doors where the handle is and in the event of a side impact your forced against them crushing your ribs. Had a similar in issue in a Dodge Stratus myself when i was in the US a few yrs ago.

There are numerous clips of the Smart being hit by an S class (side impact) here is one clip of it the Smart hitting a stationary object.

SMART Car Crash Video

Search the usual places and find plenty of clips of how they work and what people have smashed them in to!!

Personally they project the image that they are not all that safe, i wouldent want one!! Its probably not nice to be in a big smash in but if you were (and how often are we??) you would probably survive ok.
