Simple Green vs. any "good" APC

FWIW - the Simple Green corrosion story came from the military, where they were using SG to clean helicopter metallic skin panels.

The SG didn't corrode the panels directly - however, the reside in between the panels, left due to poor rinsing, allowed and electrolysis effect in the aircraft skin, leading to some electrolytic corrosion.

This then gets blown out of all proportion on the interWeb (as usual)

I've used SG on my wheels for years, and as a GPC - no issues what so ever - great product!

I used Simple green MAX today on my engine bay and noticed that it could have left some white corrosion on my engine's block. it's a bit here and there but I was wondering what I can do to get rid of the residue it left behind. it's some kinda chalky dry powdery substance that is on some of the engines parts. I'm going to rewash my engine with meguiars NXT car wash and water to HOPEFULLY get a good gloss on the metals that have suddenly faded and are chalky and dry, like the alternator:down

That chalky white is probably where the SG has hit the spray wax the manufacturer uses after manufacture for additional water proofing on cars.

I've seen it before - pain in the butt as stuff that looked clean goes all white and chalky :(

^yeah it's all chalky and greyish on my fingers when i rub on the certain pieces of metals that seem to be affected the most by the SG wash. I used a pressure washer after the SG sat on there for about 2 mintues which is making think that, that wasn't a good idea to leave it sit for more than 45 seconds or so. Everything that had a natural metal/alluminum gloss to it now is all flat and greyish and dull. I'm sad cause I didn't think this would happen like this to my new 7 month old car's engine. Do you guys think that by going tomorrow BACK to the carwash and REwashing my engine bay with a good car soap like MEGUIARS NXT car wash soap and REpressure washing it will come out better and maybe a bit shinier?. I wanna make sure the car is washed with REAL PH balanced soap and rinsted again really good

I was wondering if i could use a product like STONER's "More Shine" in the engine bay?. It has a tire on the front of the can cause it's for tire dressing but isn't that also able to be used for the rubber hoses and plastic peices underneath the hood on the engine aswell?. you could use tire dressing sprays on the entire engine compartment can't you?.

There is a chemical in a lot of APC that is caustic, I think it is sodium bifolrate, but I am not sure. I can find out on Monday and will post. Always check MSDS sheets for caustic properties and then use with caustion

so what do you think i should do?. should i go rewash my engine with REAL car soap and rinse off and see if it makes the metals a bit better?. would rewashing it with ph balanced car soap make any difference?. am i screwed?

if i got more shine or tire/trim dressing spray on the alternator on accident, would that be bad?, would the alternator malfunction if you got that type of stuff on it or sprayed it lightly or put some on it with a applicator pad?

For a APC/ degreaser, I like this stuff called Greased Lightning...

I saw a post somewhere that said this stuff is quite corrosive, but now I can't remember where.

I don't think i'ma ever use simple green again. atleast for a while and if i end up using it again, i'm not gonna use it to wash my cars engine with anymore....at all!

after i rewash my engine tomorrow with meguiars NXT car soap diluted with water in an air hand pump sprayer which i will use to spray the NXT soapy water solution onto my cars engine bay and rinse and blow dry back off. i'm gonna use these 2 things to dress the WHOLE entire engine bay and condition it and make it look pretty again.

I'm sure I can still use this for the engine bay aswell.

I'm gonna soak the hell outa the microfiber mitt with the MORE SHINE and just go to town touching EVERYTHING under the hood of my car so i can dress it all up. it's gonna look amazing!.

I use simple green for engine bays. It reaches grease where your hand can reach. Get the hose and rinse and the grease is gone. It does dry and corrode - but I follow up with vinylex or aerospace and the results looks great to me.

Simple Green is a GREEN Product It's been that way before most other companies decided to go VOC=http://www.simplegreen.com/products_family.php

You can use APC's on carpet/interior?

I'm guessing Poorboys won't be ok for this since it is also a degreaser?

I've been looking for a cost effective way to clean carpets..

I use Simple Green Pro DH.

Extreme Simple Green, and Simple Green Pro HD were initially developed for the aircraft industry and extensive testing shows that they are safe for use on aluminum, plastics, rubbers and high tech alloys, even in the most extreme circumstances. These products conform to both Boeing D6-17487P spec for general aircraft exterior cleaning and Pratt & Whitney PWA 36604revC spec for aircraft engine cleaning.

You can buy both at Home Depot, or Lowes.

Last time I used simple green I used it full strength drove to the spray wash used half the bottle if not the whole thing under the hood left it running while I washed the car then when done I sprayed the engine clean...Worked great years ago lol

Yes, it's good for tires and wheels. imo

Again many have had no problems with the original SG. However some have.

To be on the safe-side dilute the original simple green per instructions on bottle, or buy the Extreme SG for 5.00 and some change from Home Depot. It's a pretty decent size bottle.

The Pro HD version is the same thing, but in a gallon jug for 14-15 bucks I believe.

You can use it on carpets. Biggest "problem" I have with it on carpets is that it's fairly foamy, so you should use it with an extractor or shop vac and water bottle to rinse the carpet.

It actually says on the label that it can be used on leather, vinyl, rubber, carpets, cloth seats, engine compartment grease and tires.

I looked at the label briefly and it seemed like it was more of metal/exterior stuff but I guess I didn't look well enough :wall:

Good to hear though, I'll be trying it out soon :) Thanks!
