Hi Prometheus,
If you’re working by hand, you will get better results with ScratchX.
Use a clean, foam applicator pad and some elbow grease and work direction on the scratches. Make sure you clean and clay the area first.
In the last two weeks I have demonstrated how effective ScratchX is by hand on clear coat paint using a foam applicator and a little elbow grease. This is not a "Wipe-on", "Wipe-off" product, you have to work it.
If your using a Porter Cable, then you can use the MPPC and it will be more effective than the ScratchX. MPPC contains both a diminishing abrasive and a chemical cleaner.
Check out the before and after pictures of a bird dropping etching on a clear coat that were almost completely removed by hand using ScratchX.
Just so you know, I demonstrated Meguiar's philosophy of always using the least aggressive product to get the job done. For the bird dropping, I first used Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner, which is a chemical paint cleaner only.
I then demonstrated Meguiar's Clear Coat Body Scrub, which is both a chemical cleaner and a diminishing abrasive. The results were even better.
Then I applied the ScratchX and when I was through, you could hardly tell where the bird etching had been.
The pictures don't do the results justice, but the ScratchX is effective if you put a little elbow grease and passion behind the applicator pad.

Here's the same scratch after using ScratchX:
Like I mentioned, I didn't get a picture after using the ScratchX, but it was almost impossible to tell where the bird etching was previously. Point being, removing a bird drop etching and a scratch are the kind of the same thing, you're removing paint in an effort to level the paint and restore a smooth glossy finish.
