Review - KXK Dynamics Punch Set

When I heard about Meguiar`s discontinuing their 3" pads, I became really disappointed. I couldn`t believe that such a great product wasn`t a hot commodity, but that is business. Then I heard rumors about a punch set being made that could allow for me to make my own 3", 2", and even 1" pads by KXK Dynamics. After a little persuasion I jumped at the opportunity to purchase the set and boy did they deliver.

The entire kit comes with a 1", 2", 3" punch with covers and the punch board. Initial impression of the set is that they are very well made and extremely heavy, especially the 3" punch. Each punch also comes with a cover to protect the cutting side. The cutting side will need to be sharpened after 100-200 pads.

Testing the 1" punch for the first time with the pad face down (easier if up) and compressing the pad with my left hand:

After a couple of solid hits with my 2lb dead blow hammer and a twist of the punch I now have a 1" pad for my Rupes Nano. B)

Once I stepped up to the 2" punch I really felt like I was beating the crap out of my bench while bouncing everything on it all over the place. I found out that I needed a heavier dead blow, at least 4 lb and a more solid surface. I attempted to do the 2" punch on the concrete floor of my garage and it worked perfectly with my 2 lb hammer, but it took multiple hits.

I finally stepped up to the 3", aka big dog, and tried with it. The punch itself probably weighs around 5-10 lbs and if you aren`t careful the rebound will cause it to bounce and possibly mis-cut.

Since the 3" pads are a little bit smaller than the normal 3" Meg pads I was told that you can use the 3" punch to cut the BP of the Rupes Mini. Luckily I saved my warped 3" BP B).

The type of savings you can have with the punch kit:

Overall, I think this a very handy kit for anyone that likes using smaller pads. It will take some time to recoup some of your money, but in the end it could be well worth it. The entire kit is currently on sale for $249.99 or you can purchase individual punches at a time. Happy detailing!

It also can cut Rupes pads.

Edit:
I wanted to point out that because autopia does not carry the punch set I did not link where you can purchase the set. I am sure with a little google work it wouldn`t be hard. I just wanted to make that clear before anyone asks questions.

Happy detailing,
Scott

Eh, people whine about the cost of something but they don`t offer to make that something themselves and give it away for free. Anybody who comes up with an idea and brings it to market deserves every cent they make off it (or don`t make if it`s either no good or *really* not worth the cost).

I was waiting for this to be released...got tired of cutting with a utility knife while spinning backingplate...hope it would of been 3.5 or 3.25 though
I take it direct from Carpro?

Couldn`t agree more! I also really want to support KXK Dyanmics. I feel like they are very innovative and it is just a couple of detailers like us. We gotta take care of each other.

KXK Dynamics polishing rack looks awesome too
I have one of those as well. Bought it recently for myself on my birthday.

Now if I could just myself to repaint that wall. I hate painting!

Yes, it is from CarPro. I didn`t realize they were 3.25 until last night. I think that might of had to do with cost more than anything. I am going to find out.

Great idea. I would probably never cut enough pads to make my money back though. I am still pissed at Meg`s for discontinuing their 3 inch MF pads. Who wasn`t using them? I would love to have some smaller Meg`s MF pads for my Nanos. It seems Meg`s is only looking for high volume products to sell these days.

how do you go about sharpening it?
You will need a Work Sharpe Sharpener tool. They are about $75 on Amazon.

I would like to know as well. Crazy not to use them IMHO. If you want to buy some 6" pads and send them to me I will punch them for you.

thanks for the reply. any vibration/balancing issues with the rupes mini after cutting the backing plate?
I haven`t had a chance to try any of them yet. I have a car coming tomorrow that I will have a chance to try them all on. I will post an update once I do.

I think I may just order the one inch for the nano. I haven`t been a fan of the 2inch on the nano yet, seems like it stalls really easy
