Repairable?

I do not have pics yet but a friend of mine recently bought a 1998 civic. The paint obviously was cleaned with windex and never taken care of. The hood has things imperfections, I cannot really explain them other then they look like tiny snowflakes all over the entire hood.

Anyone think this is repairable or even heard of this?

If the clearcoat is failing, I don't know of any remedy short of a repaint. I guess if your friend understands the risk and associated possible consequences, you could try buffing it.

The clear coar is cracking, I think what you are referring to is called "checking" and that is not repairable. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

As everyone has mentioned, I think it's done. Get some pics posted if you can and we can tell you for sure.

I have done some spot repairing of this "checking". It does look beter than it did but I can't say it was worth the effort. I wet sanded the spots into the primer as they do go that deep, then got paint code match in a can through express paint in addition to a can of clear. after I sanded I built up spot with color match by spraying multiple shots of the paint onlt in the sanded spot , allowing drying time between each shot. Once I achieved a build up of paint in the spot I then feathered th paint outwadr a little. Then once dried I shot clear over the area. This was on an old car that had run it's course as far as never seeing any resale value. I would not attempt this on a newer car and don't really know If I would do it again. As soon as I clean her car again I will post some before and after photos. I probably won't see this car again hor at least 2 months. I would say for the time involved that a repaint of the hood would be more cost effective. If you friend should attempt ant paint repair though,Emphasizs preparation as being indespensable, Lots of Prep-All before and after sanding and a tack cloth before spraying any kind of paint.

I had this on my old beater...sounds like the clearcoat is drying out / cracking and there's no way to fix it :(

I have the same problem. It drives me nuts every time I detail my car. Is there anyway to hide this? Maybe a glaze with heavy fillers?

I guess by now you've figured out that you can't fix checking.

But you can make it shiney again!

(BTW, the checks will still be there.)

Thank god its only on the hood of my friends car and not the whole thing. I'll probably try a strong glaze for a temporary fix although it probably won't do much. Thanks for the info.
