Removing swirls instad of hiding.

mixxmstrmike- Interesting, the Griot's orange pad is *very* mild cut-wise. Heh heh, even Griot's polishes work better for me when I use different pads, at least if I'm trying to do any real correction.

It's was/is a fairly new car.. But yeah, i felt just a little bit sick when i saw the panel; to say the least ..

I bet you felt bad, perfectly understandable!

One thing to consider is that some cars have been through you-can't-IMAGINE before you get them, even when they're "new". Those of us who've worked at dealerships could tell you stories you'd find unbelievable.

EDIT: Check this out from a recent post- "I was curious on the opinion of this board on wet sanding. Ive been doing some occasional work at a stealership and they seem to be 'wet sand crazy' lately...."

Consider that many of us have used *very* aggressive approaches with rotaries without causing clearcoat failure, let alone hitting the color coat. Something happened to your car before you got it, who knows what it really amounted to.

The Griot's orange pad is consistent with Lake Country's orange pad (I ordered the orange pad from Autogeek for reference) and I was surprised to in its ability to cut as well as it did with SSR 2.0. I do admit that I sat on a few places for quite some time to remove a lot of the swirling, but that's what I wanted. I'm working the least aggressive method, IMO, with Griot's orange pad. I was really tempted to immediately with a yellow cutting pad, but thank goodness I didn't.

FWIW, I also used the orange pad with Griot's new paint sealant on a white Integra and I'm impressed by the product. It actually worked as advertised "removing" some of the marring, not all. I'm using it for my winter prep for my daily driver. We'll see how it goes!

Maybe Griot's has changed the pad since the last one I ordered, for me it didn't cut any more than anybody else's polishing pad. But then the paint being worked is one of those things that can make these comparisons worthless ;)

I have a question, on subject.

If i was to use the 3M for Dark Cars to hide swirls, and then apply Natty's or S100, would applying the wax remove the fillers? Or seal them in?

Always wondered that...

Not sure 1SLOW50, might be a little of both. If one works 3M SMR well enough it does remove swirls, but to make sure use the 50/50 ISO wipe. I have had used it in the past and got fooled by the hiding abilities. Don't use it any more, anyone want a half full bottle?

That is my intention though, to hide. After assessing my paint, I think I will just try to hide some defects with fillers. Although removing most of my swirls via PC, there is all kinds of things wrong I would rather just hide, for now anyways. :) (Me = Want Rotary.)

If Nattys or S100 contained no cleaners, they wouldn't remove the fillers, correct?

Yeah, that's the right idea. Whether it'll work as well as you'd like, well, :nixweiss

But sealing in fillers with wax is something that people have been doing for a long, long time.

There's a threa titled something like "3M SMR Fillers Rock" about how somebody has been very happy doing it this way.

I'd use something "heavier" than P21S though. Haven't tried Natty's so I dunno how it'll work.

If I ever get the Caprice back on the road  I plan to hide its marring by sealing some kind of glaze under a "heavy" wax like #16 or Collinite 476S. I expect it to work fairly well.

I noticed you said P21S, typo maybe. But if not, is S100 heavier than P21S?

Oops, sorry :o

Not so much a typo as simple carelessness on my part; I automatically translated S100 (which I haven't used) to P21S (which I have used). I dunno if there's any real difference between the two so I can't/shouldn't really comment on the S100.
