The sites (more than just mosques) are monitored from the OUTSIDE and NOT on the property that is being monitored. They are monitored from public places therefore not requiring a warrant. Just like someone can sit in a public park and monitor you and takes pictures of you. It's not an unreasonable "search & seizure" type situation that would violate someone's 4th Ammendment right.
This is not related to the eavesdropping on teror suspects scenarios. This is an FBI program (not NSA) along with the Department of Energy's Nuclear Emergency Support Team.
This is much to do about nothing in my opinion. Hopefully this won't hinder law enforcement from trying to monitor threats. Kudos for exposing effective counter terror measures, and once again helping the enemy.
On a side note, I see NYC cops when I'm in Manhattan with hand held radiation and chemical detectors monitoring the streets (people, stores), subways, train stations, etc...
We now live in a world facing a covert and stateless enemy where the threat is real and beyond dangerous. These are effective measures to track suspects and surveil sites.
I know this danger first hand. I've gone to synagogue to worship on Jewish holidays and had policemen with CAR-15 automatic weapons, kevlar vests and helmets and attack dogs standing guard. They're not there for their health. That's how real the threat is. You get a strange feeling when you see this outside your house of worship inside the United States. You realize real quick the potential for an attack.
