Pre Business Plan Questions

As the spam says, I want to "fire my boss" before leaving for grad school next fall.

I've checked out score.org and am close to putting together a business plan. Advertising, flyers, magnets, and websites will come later, but before I can even put together the business plan I need guidance from the professionally experienced.

The question: are people, on the whole, reticent to give you their car for the day/unwilling to drop off their car for a couple of hours? Yes, I realize it is the most convenient for all pro detailers to use the garage, but I feel I can do the best work in my familiar environment with guaranteed power/water/light. Should I suck it up and practice more with mobile detailing? I have done some test runs using the two cars (packing one and cleaning the other without cheating) but I'm never satisfied as much as the final garage walk-arounds.

In summary, let me know what to expect. I spend an average of 3-5 hours per vehicle depending on condition and size. The vehicles don't all receive the same treatment because I aim for the same result instead. My pricing decisions will come along later with the advertising and flyers, etc... Should I stand firm on working out of the home or will I have to cave and attempt to make the Varsity Mobile team?

Thanks in advance.

You just may want to look into that before you start detailing too many cars at your house.

Hey, if you're gonna do a few vehicles every once in a while it's really not going to matter much. It's only if you get too busy. Then it may be a problem.

I am dealing with a grey area right now--I won't be working full time in the fall anyway and I was curious to slowly transition (as slowly as one can transition into summer) from 1-2 cars per weekend into possibly quitting work during the late spring/summer and solely concentrating on auto beautification. Who has the largest beefs with working out of residences--Uncle Sam, municipal licensing boards, neighbors, etc? Neighbors won't be a problem. Those wheels have been greased:D

Hence, with all the experience on here, what is an approximate percentage of customers who will absolutely not hand their keys over to the detailer? It would be easy to passionately explain that you want the best job possible for their sled, and given the inherent honesty of that statement coming from an Autopian, this explanation will be believable. Has anyone had difficulties explaining the benefit of pick-up and delivery of vehicles?
