Porter CAble 7424 or UDM

prob because the outer edge would be spinning faster the farther out you go from the rotation axis. On a DA it just bogs it down because it doesnt have the power. My $.02

Simply put, exactly.

I a PC, rotary, Griot's Buffer. Debating on throwing out the Griot's unit or returning it and picking up the UDM for the paint and keeping the PC for my aquabrush.

What's your opinions?

Anyone else? :)

Isn't the Griot's machine and PC the same thing? Not sure. Either way, if you are in the market for that "type" of machine, the UDM is my pick. No need to keep additional machines, but its almost like detailing products in general, you can never have enough, right? :buffing:

Wellllllll

Id say when the products start going bad on the shelf because youve got so many you cant possibly use them all, then probably its time to say, 'enough is enough'! :D

You are right!! I am going through that right now, lol. :aww:

So what do you guys think. I have a bunch of LC 5.5inch pads(used to use them with my now gone PC) and I was wondering if the UDM comes with backing plate for those or I need to get something additional.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The backing plate that comes with the UDM is 5 inches I believe, so the LC 5.5 inch pads would be perfect :)

On TOL the UDM is 20 bucks more than the PC, easy choice there! Now, if you already have a PC, get a rotary and you're set. My curiosity about a Cyclo will one day be solved, but for now, I have to devote all my extra cash to replacing our TV that died of old age last night!

For those of us in Canada who buy from eShine.ca, the UDM package with backing plate and 3 pads is $15 less than the PC package with backing plate and 3 pads, so I think you can guess which one I just got! Can't wait to start using it!! :waxing:

great thanks guys.

Mine comes on Tuesday.

I have my work cut out for me.

My black Honda Pilot needs some TLC.

Cheers

titsataki,

While you are waiting for your equipment to come in, now is a really good time to get familiar with the actual detailing process. I don't know if you have read the Guide To Detailing, but it is a really good read and helped me a LOT in the beginning.

Want to pull the trigger on the UDM but have recurring tendonitis in my right elbow (too much golf) and wondering if the vibration will irritate it to a point I can't use it--especially after polishing for 2 hours or so.

Anyone have experience with this and the tendonitis I mentioned?

Thanks much.

My UDM should be arriving on Tuesday too. My dad's truck is just waiting for it to arrive so it can shine once more.

Will do.

I love those write ups. I love the videos some vendors have as well.

I have used the PC for probably 2 years but I only do my cars and a friend's car here and there.

I have had some trouble polishing that truck. But that would be another thread and I know I can depend on all of you guys.

Cheers

I have a new pearl white Infinity FX 35 so I am of the opinion that the Porter Cable 7424 would not be of much benefit to me. Do you feel my assumption is correct?

I do have a black Mercedes E 320 that has a few spider webs so would it be worth the investment for it?

I'm waiting (trying to be patient) for my UDM to show up. According to UPS it will be here Friday and depending on what time it gets there, I'm going to give the UDM and some new products a workout.

I'm feeling like a kid at Christmas right about now.

I used my UDM at speed 5 for almost 7 hours straight yesterday, with very short breaks, and the only sore thing on me was my back from bending over, but no vibration related problems at all as the UDM is a very smooth machine. I do not use the handle though, the first day I tried it for 20 minutes with the handle and my hand and fingers swelled up so much I couldn't get my wedding ring back on! The handle just magnifies the vibration, and honestly you don't need the thing, I find it easier to just hold the top of the unit (this allows you to regulate the amount of pressure you apply to the pad better too, IMO)

You would benefit by a machine polisher regardless of color or type of car.

I agree. I havent seen a car yet which, over time, doesnt have some degree of micromarring on the finish. Plus, even just to apply cleaner, glaze, and wax, nothing beats the DA machine.

It appears from those who have used it that because of the increased power of the unit it is easier to perform paint correction. It will perform above and beyond the capabilities of a PC.

Myself, I'm fine with my PC. If you already have a PC, it's unlikely that you'll need to upgrade.
