Here is todays car all polished out and ready for delivery. LSP was M21 applied on speed 3 with my PC and W-9006 polishing pad.

Prep:

Washed with QEW

APC 4:1 for convertible top and engine bay

Meguiar's Clay Bar from Quik Clay system

Blue and green painters tape

Newspaper

Polishing:

Process was RB/W-8006 M80 followed by PC/W-8006 M80

The paint was relatively soft and easy to work with. After the paint was cleaned off, the remaining QEW was applied with a soft body brush to wipe down the wheels. Used bare hands to wipe brake dust off inside of wheels using bug sprayer to flush then wiped down rotors with MF towel.

Dressing:

Hyperdressing

Endurance High Gloss (Tires)

Trim Detailer Spray

Wax:

2 coats of M21

Total working time: 8 hours.

This is a shot of it fully completed--just to whet your appetite for what's to come!

Ok, so you arrive on site to polish out a car. The sun is overwhelming, so you whip out your EZ UP and struggle to get it open. Would be great to have somebody holding one of the legs so you can pull it open. Hmmm, what if I could use my trailer as a stooge? I'll attach a bungee cord to the convenient hole in the bottom of the leg, and attach the other end to the frame of my trailer. Now I can pull the opposite leg and unfold it!

You can close it in the same manner. Having a trailer is great! Provides advertising when you are parked and while driving to and from a customers location. It also gets your detailing equipment and chemicals outside of the car. If you've got any portable lights, these tend to attract moths and other bugs, and leaving them on the trailer means no unwelcome pests inside your car.

My location. Setting up the EZ UP. Notice the leg closest to the trailer.

With the paint thoroughly cleaned of dust and debris, performing an accurate inspection was much easier. I saw these scuff marks and pointed it out to the customer who had no idea where they came from.

There were visible swirls throughout the paint. With such a light colored paint, that swirls weren't bad, but they could certainly be improved.

Swirls!

Scuff near the door handle.

Engine bay wasn't filthy, but it was dusty and all the plastic and rubber could be dressed to make it look even better.

Convertible top had wear marks and numerous dirt marks. I used APC, a soft towel, and about 4 applications to remove the black marks. The lighter wear marks couldn't be improved, bu the overall top looked better because it was clean. There didn't appear to be any water repellent protection on the top as the water just soaked into the material instead of beading.

I had a rough time removing all the bonded contaminants. In some areas, I made over 12 passes in trying to get it completely smooth. I think I'm going to have to keep a supply of aggressive clay on hand for future buffouts.

Just showing some of the bonded contaminants that the clay removed.

Clay is great stuff!

Clay is doing a great job at removing this scuff.

Final remaining black residue. I shot this just before claying it off to show that the area is now clean.

You will see my trailer in different locations. The location to polish this car was right between a lot of different cars and I had to constantly move my gear around as different cars pulled in and out. All but one of the neighbors was very gracious.

I used one 5 Gallon bucket with a grit guard filled with 3 liters of water and QEW to wash the car in the shade. The other bucket contained clean water for rinsing. Once I was finished washing the paint, I dipped my flagged body brush and cleaned the wheels. After it was all dried, I applied the tape, wheel covers, and top sheet.

Up until this point, the paint was washed, and claybarred, and already looks better.

All taped off and ready for buffing

Hard to see test spot line on left but it's better than right side.

185288544_dd2c202b1f_o.jpg

No Swirls! Result of test spot after a few passes using PC and M80

185288583_8caec76306_o.jpg

No swirls! Well almost none.

185288604_5e06690c6b_o.jpg

Painters tape is used to protect edges. A plastic sheet was used to protect the canvas top and windows from splatter.

185288646_0f0ffe77c7_o.jpg

Used blue painters tape to protect vents.

185288663_6cadbff536_o.jpg

Instead of using lots of smaller strips of painters tape, a single stripe of wide tape works great!

Lens flare has obscured right hand side of this picture showing the detailed engine.

Love that reflection! Tires were dressed with Endurance High Gloss gel.

185288790_3559d031d2_o.jpg

All exterior plastic was dressed using Trim Detailer or Hyperdressing.

185288805_4976285491_o.jpg

Highly reflective. Swirls are gone. Paint is deeper, darker, and richer.

Love that reflection!

LSP is M21

I really enjoyed working on this car. Had a fabulous customer, and met lots of his neighbors who were also interested in my services.

Even the property owner encouraged me to leave business cards at her office, which I will be doing next time I come back--which is in a week to do a neighbors car!

Have you ever used a rotary buffer? No matter how careful you are, splatter gets everywhere, and I don't think you can ever tape up enough of a car, unless you enjoy picking polish out of the cracks and crevices. :)

nice work, but I think its "tape overkill" from my perspective

Looking good! What would you consider a more aggressive clay than say what you were using? Also what are the advantages of a more aggressive clay? Are they a bit dangerous on the paint?

Andrew

that is one seriously good write up, I just have one question if I may?

*** are those two chairs for? lol you get to sit down too? ;-)

Great detail, pics say so much, well done

proably to set his tools on so he does nto contaminate them with dirt, and does not have to bend over.

I'll hazard a guess... they're either for spectators or the judges!

If you guys didn't notice, there were drinks and chips. Must have put up a show for two.

Excellent work btw. Love the write-up!

Octane guy is very correct in the manner which he taped up everything. I did a Lotus Elise where there are plastic vents EVERYWHERE and i didnt tape them all up and spent way too much time getting polishing dust and splatted off. Next time I do a car like that i will be taping up the car just like octane guy did.

Nice work. Dang it though...I still can't decide if I want the Carrera 4 or save more for the new Vantage by Aston Martin. Ha.
