Porsche Carrera 4 Restored

Thanks everyone!! I just finished a 1997 Toyota 4Runner..that things hauls!!!...Nice to see some comments!

re: aggressive clay

Actually, I haven't used any yet, but I'm interested in trying if it'll remove contaminants faster and more thoroughly. Meguiar's sells two kinds--the aggressive kind is for body shops who need speed and from what I understand will mar the finish. But if you're going to do rotary work it won't matter.

re: Folding Chairs

I use them for resting my butt once in awhile, for holding my tools while in use, and for holding my lunch that I rarely get to eat away from the ground!

re: Tape and Lotus

Ohhh, the Lotus has tons have plastic fins! I did one of those with Mike Phillips a year ago, and we used lots of tape! I guess I'm getting a bit lazy, and while the wide tape is more expensive, it's a lot easier to apply and remove.

Anyways, I really appreciate the feedback.

Your taping job is first class...must really save a lot of time in the end. Where do you pick yours up? Could one just use the painters tape found in like Wal-Mart, Or should I go directly to a napa or carquest? Thanks for the help - and the detail looks great as always!

OG: As usual, a stunning performance. I have a couple questions though...

- You tow that trailer behind your Mini? Any more shots of it behind?

- It seems like you took over that parking lot with your equipment. Did you have to clear that with the parking lot "owner"?

- Why the use of green AND blue painter's tape? (btw: I agree with you on taping up vents and such...I hate cleaning dust and splatter out)

Again, :up.

Joshua312, yeah, you can use any painter's masking tape. I always stick to the 3M brand, stay with someone you trust- but other people may use others.

You know what? I was like......How come no one ask OG about the trailer n his Mini :(

Yeah, Enquire mind wants to know. Great job!!

Nice work on the 996 C4! :2thumbs: Really nice pics as well!

I know first hand how important it is to tape off one of these cars! :chuckle:

It goes to show that by prep work and time, results can be outstanding rather than pretty good for several hours. Too bad you didn't have it inside a shop to work on it.

Porsche paint can be a PITA! My C2S being black will show every detail of ANY defect, but then again, Porsche black is one nice color when fully detailed and glossy!

Next time you should try some of the Menzerna when it comes close to final polishing. Seems to work well with Porsche paints. It also has a lot to do with pads. Better pads get better results!

I'm sure the owner is now happy as all hell!! :spot

Deanski

Sorry for the late reply--been busy detailing....

Yes any blue painters tape will work. Some brands stick better than others. I use 3M. You can buy it at Target, Home Depot, etc.. It's the same stuff at the PBE stores, only difference being in selection of widths. Target and Home Depot only sell the wider 3/4" or 1" and wider tapes. If you want thin stuff, you need to go to a PBE.

While taping does save a lot of time, it needs to be remembered when I'm on an all day detail, my brain is at its sharpest when I begin. 12 hours later, the potential for me to miss a spot of residue is much higher than earlier in the day, so by the end of the day, I want to be working towards completion. So yes it saves me time, effort, and energy that can best be applied towards the interior or other parts of the car.

re: Trailer shots

Sure, see below

re: Taking over Parking Lot

Not really. The owner parked his car at the end of the parking lot. I parked my trailer as close to the car as I could. When people came and went, I just moved it around. I tried to minimize what I had on the ground to minimize the moving. The property owner loved my work, and was very gracious about me working there. She encouraged me to leave a stack of business cards with her.

re: Green and Blue Tape

The green tape is actually a special tape I use for my video shooting. It was left over from a green screen project I did years ago. It's a type of gaffers tape. It's wide, and not too tacky, much like painters tape. I only need a few strips to cover things. You can't buy this at a paint store--I got it from a gaffer supply store.

LOL. I built the trailer to ease the burden of having to load and unload my MINI. While I detail every day, I am also responsible for taking my 2 year old son to school in the mornings, so unloading the gear each night so I could put his child seat in the car, then loading it back up was wasting too many hours, and too much energy. The trailer makes life much more simpler. You can call this Version 1. It's a work in progress, making changes to it every day. I'm working on a new version of the trailer that's spiffier looking. LOL

Here's my rig.
