Polishing over pinstriping?

What do you do when you come across pinstriping that is not painted on and you are going to polish? Do you tape it or just run the PC across it. I've yet to come across any yet that didn't have clear coat over it, but I know I soon will.

IIRC my Blazer had the tape without clear I just went over it. It didn't get polished but a few times.

All of the stripes that I've worked with had no clear... the only ones that would have it are painted pinstrips on a custom paint job I believe. Just be careful around them. If they are in good condition they can be polished over, but once they get old and crumbly, you run the risk of screwing them up some more.

All of the stripes I have worked with ahve been the stickerish kind, with no clear. I have run the rotary @1500 with no ill effects what so over. So IMHO polish on!

That's exactly what they were.

Any old looking kind, I'll stay away from if possible. I was just concerned that it might take the color off even new pinstriping if I used SSR1 or similar.

Glad to hear more good news. I figured it was ok, but I didn't want to learn the hard way.

I come across many stickers, and pinstriping. If they are in good condition, and the edges seem like they are still stuck down, then It should be fine to run over them, even with a rotary. If the edges are starting to curl or if there is many breaks in it, then I would either go over by hand or just barely touch them with the pad and go easy on them.

Yep, that's what the S-Blazers have. Over the course of 3 years, I polished over mine to the point that the tape/stripes started chipping/peeling off. I've since learned to be extremely careful around them or just tape 'em off.

I must mention a story:

When I was doing work for the limo company, I did a bus they had there that had a large stripe on the lower panel. It was about 2" long. Prior to my being there working, they had anyone, even the boss doing buffing. They had been suprised that I was buffing @ 1500 rpm, and was suprised that I ran at a "low" speed. Im guessing they ran somewere in the high 2k or low 3k range. needless to say there was burns all over the stripes and big chunks missing etc.

Lesson: If your going to buff at outragously high, and uneeded speeds, dont buff over pinstriping.

You need to be carefull and watch your pads for the amount of paint transfer. Also I check the surface more often that just normal surfaces. Here is a picture of pin striping and flames on one of my cars....
