Polishing My black supra. what a nightmare.

Had a go at polishing a bit on my 95 supra tonight. Turned in to be a nightmare.

I started off By washing the car with CWG and then clayed the car.

I then messed about abit with polishing pads and compunds. I have alot of pads and quite a few polishing compounds. The paint had alot og swirls and is a bit hazy.

I tried 3 passes of menzerna 106ff on 6,5" orange pad. removed tha hazy'nes, but still lots of swirls. I then stepped it up a bit trying SIP on orange pad for 2 passes. did nothing. stepped it up again to PFW and SIP and made 2 passes. nope nothing changed. still the same swirls. ***. I was the wondering it it just needed to be fine polished down. that I was making the swirls, even though the same swirls were visible after tha passes. But I tried to step it down anyway. 2 passes with 106ff on orange pad and 2 passes with 85rd on white pad. Nothing different at all..

Any advice to what I can try. I have some powergloss that I have never tested, could this be the solution ??? Car has been repainted sometime in its life so its no longer a SS paint, this paint is killing me. it soft to scratch, but scratches are hellish to polish out..

Im lost.. anybody with a good advice.

Im using the flex 3401 DA

Heres a picture off the hood I was working on showin abit of 50\50 after all the passes.. untouched on the left and polished alot of passes on the right.

best picture I could get.. was hard to capture the swirls.

maybe its time to get a rotary :P

Your car is beautiful. Those rims are a perfect match. I'd trade you straight across for my Charger right now...

Sorry to go off topic, but the Supra has always been a dream car for me. And that color with those wheels... well.. let's just say "nice car". :)

Instead of stepping up to something more aggressive than what you've tried, try the opposite approach; get some really gentle polish like Menzerna Final Polish II (also known as Micro Polish) and do a couple of applications with a zero bite foam pad. An LC black/grey/red or blue would be good.

The menzerna polishes that you have tried are all great polishes, but they are also all Ceramiclear rated; they work far better on hard clear coats than they do on soft ones. Often on soft paint, you'll get better results with more gentle polishes, and *much* more gentle pads. Often, I'll use a zero bite pad for the compounding step on soft paints.

If you don't get anywhere with the gentle attempts, then I'd agree that it's time to bring out the M105 and give it a shot.

And be sure to post more pictures as you go. :D

First more than anything, is your technique ok? Are you letting the polish do its thing by having slow arm movement, medium pressure and a cutting speed (I am not familiar with the Flex, but on the PC it would be either 5 or 6)? If yes then, it looks like PG is in order, try it with PFW and chase that with 106 and a black or red/blue pad. ...it really sounds like you have hard paint.

Didn't tell you guys how I actually polished it. I spread it around 4 and once spread i go full out on 6 on the flex, using just a dab off polish on the pad and buffing until it goes clear again and wipe off. I have been using too much polish on prior attempts, but that just made things hazy. But after I used just a dab results were perfect on other cars so i thought it would be on this one aswell. :P

No Deal, Supra is my dream car so I wouldnt trade it for an enzo. If I did I would sell it and by more supras. :P in fact Im buying another one :P

The finest polish I have is the 85rd wich says micro polish on it but maybe not fine enough? I have blue and black pads so I will give it a go.

If not I wish I had a bottle of m105 but I only have Powergloss.. maybe give that one a try on PFW if nothing helps.

People talk so much of the m105 that I might aswell order some :P

thank you for your help.:thx:thx

Hehe, been doing a couple daily drivers lately, and the hoods and front sides are mostly horrible after a "slafsete" winter..

The black Supra's have single stage paint so it should be pretty easy to clear out those swirls. I've used just a PC at speed 5 and Megs 83 on CCS orange pad and it got everything out. What you are using sounds like a bit of overkill and I can't imagine why it's not removing anything at all for you.

The car has been repainted, and typically an after market coat is extremely soft or hard, it's looking like the latter. I've polished out a black REPAINTED, non factory, Supra and that clear was hard. Intensive polish was doing it but with much effort and only achieved about 80% correction before pumping to PG.

well if you read it all it is a resprayed car so now has clearcoat. If it was stock paint SS it would be a breeze.

I will try some PFW and PG on the hood again and see what happens. :P

I will post up some shots and we can discuss from there :P

The car actually is glossy like no other car I have seen, but under direct sunlight or halogens you can see alot of swirls up close, so was hoping I could get rid of it. :P If there was any local detailers with knowledge like som of you guys I would bring it over to them, but they are all rotary happy hack jobbers so Id rather not :P

something else to consider is maybe when it was painted, they may have hacked the base coat before clearing it.

This has struck my mind aswell, but I guess I will give a few passes and see. If I can get one spot swirlfree im hoping the rest is the same. If not it could be underneath the clear and therefore impossible to correct. But hoping not.

Car will need respray some time in its life anyway, but was hoping for it to last a little longer. :P thats why im testing on the hood. that can easily be removed from the car and resprayed incase I should **** things up. :P

Going out to my garage and have a little test with PFW and PG.

How long can masking tape stay on the paint before getting stuck REAL good. was hoping I could spend a couple of days polishing a little now and then. should I just rip it off after each session and apply new whenever I start again.

?

thank you all.

gave it a little shot but not much improvement I'm afraid. Tried pfw with PG one pass, worked the product until clear and wiped off. this time there were swirls all over the place, but that was kinda expected since it was a heavier compound. so I had my hopes up that when I polished them down with a less aggresive polish it would look fine.. took some SIP on orange pad and made a pass. alle the swirls from compunding went away, but the swirls that I initially started to remove are still there. POS car. Im now going to try what superbee said. blue or black pads and gentle polishes to see what happens.. I don't think it will do f... all but I might aswell try.

Too bad I don't live near any superdetailers. maybe I should give mr dalton a call and fly him in? just need to work a little overtime first. :P

If nothing changes Im just gonna go ahead and polish the car with SIP 106ff and 85rd to get the hazyness out and just leave the swirls the way they are. Im not getting anywhere so best of too just admit defeat before throwing a hammer through my garage window.
