I'm trying to figure out what PC to get, looking on sites and even on the PC website but i can only find minor diffrences.

Everything between all these are the same Except:

7424

Spindle Thread Size = Accepts 5/16 - 24

Comes with Polishing Pad

7334 = can't find on their website

7335

Comes with Sandpaper

7336

Comes with Sandpaper

Can attach vacume hose to suck-up dust

They are all 1/4lb diffrence in weight and 1/2" diffrence in length...

Is that all? Or am i missing something?

And can't you use the same backing's and pads for all of them?

Thanks for the help all

The 7424 comes with a 6" backing plate.

The 7336 comes with a 5" backing plate.

Or maybe it's 7424 - 6"counterweight and 7336 - 5" counterweight.

I don't know anything about the 7334 or 7335. Just get one of the other two.

the only difference is the 7336 has a 6" counter weight and the 7424 has a 5" counter weight. someone has tested the two counter weights and found little to no difference in the operation of the machine there was a post on it some time ago on the meguiars site.

Get the one you can get at the best price, the 7224 and 7336 are the identical except for an indistinguishable difference in the counterweights. I've used both and I can't tell the difference.

if the 7424 has BOTH couter weights, would'nt that be the better of them all?

i've been searching and they all seem around the exact same price :o

the 7424 doesn't always come with both. I ordered mine from CoastalTool.com, and they had a deal going where you get both counterweights with the machine.

In my opinion, there's no need to have both counterweights. I have the 6" counterweight in mine and never have the need to replace it with the 5".

I'd say to get the 7336 from Lowe's for $99 and the more versatile counterweight (6"), but that's me.

Lowe's for $99 you say? hmm.

I heard the "backing plates" are diffrent... whats the diffrence?

I need to get into some tight curvy spots... do i need to use a perticular backing plate?

I'm new to machine detailing too and I just bought the 7336 from Lowe's a couple of weeks ago for $97. I haven't used it yet because I'm waiting on the Sonus DAS Pad kit from the Autopia store. But you don't have to worry about the backing plates between the 7424 and 7336 being different because you'll most likely end up not using it. Just get a pad kit that comes with a backing plate.

Exceldetail.com sells a Propel pad kit for about 30 bucks that comes with backing plate but the plate is out of stock right now according to their website.

The Autopia store sells the Sonus DAS pad kit with backing plate for about 50 bucks.

And I'm sure other Autopians will be able to direct you to other sites as well.

Meguiar's also sells a kit of three pads and a nice backing plate for around $33 last I checked. Decent pads too.

The backing plate it comes with is for sanding and it comes with a buffing pad that is glued in place. The backing plates that people talk about on the forum is a 5" disk that has velcro and the 6" pads are held on that way so you can quickly switch pads out without using tools. Several companies sell starter kits with the velcro backing plate and pads. I bought the Meguiars kit for the PC and it's been great. For my rotary I use Lake Country pads but they are harder to get locally. These backing plates fit the 7224 or 7336 exactly the same way. Be careful not to use the PC at it's highest speed because the heat and friction from the vibration will ruin the velcro.

i'm trying to find these starter kits you guys are talking about... but so far no luck.

but just to be clear i want to check and make sure this is what i should be looking at getting:

Ureathane 5" Backing Plate: http://www.autogeek.net/lc43125.html

and these are the various pads:http://www.autogeek.net/vcpad.html

Whys does the "Yellow Cutting Foams 6.5" in the above link have a hole in the center of it?

Thanks all, i'm still searching for the Starter Kits

The hole in the center is more for rotary buffers to get them centered on a nub on the backing plate. If you get that backing plate you will have to use pads with the hole it and not all of them do. Here's a link to the Meg's kit for $32.99 with 3 pads and backing plate. It comes with 2 yellow for polishing and 1 white for waxing.

BTW, that's list price, if you go to a local auto paint store you can usually get stuff cheaper and quicker and not have to pay shipping.

i dont have a local auto paint store...:nixweiss other then getting the 7336 at Lowes, everything else i have to buy on-line... last time i checked Pepboys and Autozone didnt have any pads or backing plates either :(

Heh heh, we agree about 1:2 on this one ;)

Yeah, I have a 7424 and a 7336 and I cannot tell them apart. Asolutely identical now that I've fitted both with 6" counterweights and aftermarket plates. NO way to tell which is which.

Despite the "no difference" post on MOL, I *do* notice a difference between the counterweights, and I use the 6" one for all applications. Note that the weights were originally made to match with sanding systems, which all weigh less than our pad/plate combos (sandpaper weighs a lot less than a foam pad).

Except for a batch of Meg's pads, I've never had any problems related to using the PC at speed 6. You can do it until the foam wears out with LC and Griot's pads. I do *all* my PC-polishing at 6 and while I've worn out a PC I've never messed up the velcro on one of those brands of pads.

The Meg's pads were really made for a rotary and didn't handle the D/A stress very well. I hear the newer ones from Meg's don't have this problem. I've yet to try the other brands of pads available these days, but IIRC some are merely relabelled LC pads.

Speaking of pads, you people just starting out should consider getting a small backing plate and some 4" pads when you order your stuff. This really *is* the best combo for removing marring. NO WAY will I try to "de-swirl" a car with a larger pad; if not for the 4" pad setup, I'd do all my marring removal by Cyclo or rotary. The PC tends to bog down and merely "jiggle" if you put pressure on it with the larger pads (larger being 6-6.5", let alone the 7.5" ones). And trying to remove marring with "just the weight of the PC, let the product do the work" is highly inefficient time-wise and often downright ineffective.

yes i was planning on getting the smaller plate/pads (i thought 5", didnt know they had 4") because i've got a lot of small spots to get into... so far i've only been able to find a 5" Backing (says it's goof upto 6.5" pad) and a 6" backing (says it's good for 6.5-8")

a 4" very flexable backingplate/pad would be great!

ideas on where to find these smaller ones?

Thanks again all!
