PC Polisher Question - Newbie!

Just a couple of questions for you guys out there... After much debating, I've finally justified purchasing the PC polisher! :) Anyway, I've been driving a Silver 2000 VW Passat and currently use the Meguiar's Medallion product as my primary source of paint protection. The car has received a fresh coat, by hand, every 6 months. To make a long story short, I'm confused with machine polishing. Although I have not done this in the 2 years I've owned the car, I understand that one should polish a vehicle prior to waxing. This will be the first thing I do (after washing and claying) once the PC arrives! From what I have read on this EXCELLENT site, the PC will do a fine job. Having said this, I'm confused when it comes to waxing... I only know of waxing a vehicle by hand, so I think of applying the wax to the car, waiting for it to haze, and then buffing it off. Can I both apply AND remove a liquid or paste wax with the PC? If so, what are the proper steps for waxing? Do you just apply the wax to the pad and buff it into the surface until it breaks down and dissappears? Or, do you apply it by hand, let it haze, and then buff it out with the PC? Or do you only apply and remove waxes by hand? I was considering trying the Pinnacle Paste Glaz and it almost seems as if you apply and remove it by hand? I'm sure this is not a difficult thing to understand, I just want to make sure I have all of my facts straight before taking the PC to the car's finish! Thanks for your help in advance!

Welcome FL2000VW! (gee, I feel like the Welcoming Commitee here today! :p)

Yes, you can apply and remove both liquid and paste waxes by PC. Which to do is personal preference, but most people who use the PC to wax at all only use the PC to apply wax since it allows them to get very thin coats. Most people remove by hand, but you can use a PC for this too (I think a MF or terry bonnet is the one to use - just like hand removal).

You don't need to work in or "break down" pure (non-cleaner) waxes since they don't have any job other than to just sit on the surface. Just apply to desired consistency and treat it as if you've hand applied it. Pinnacle Paste Glaz is both on the pricey side and easy to apply/buff, so I think most PPG users would tell you that applying this by PC would be a waste. Nice smelling easy on/off waxes like that should be a joy to hand apply, not a chore. :)

Ummmm, that's more than a "couple questions".......;) Just messin with ya

Hey man, first off, Welcome to Autopia. This is THE place for the hard core car nut.

Your questions are very common and have been asked by many people before. What typically happens is when you get one or two questions answered, more questions pop into your head. So instead of tackling everything you wrote I'm gonna suggest you spend some quality time searching info about PC usage. The Search function works extremely well so you can use whatever word or phrase you like to start off with.

There have been many threads that discussed detailed PC usage so find those. Autopians like "Carguy" and "Geekysteve" have posted extensive and detailed info on how to properly use a PC. Our mayor of Autopia, DavidB, even created a PC video that's somewhere here. Do a Search and the link will come up. That video will explain a lot.

Proper use of buffers is more art than science. I've been using various machines for 20+ years so all I can say is learn the basics do's and dont's and just start using the machine. It's not a piece of software or a cell phone with a detailed users guide, the PC is more like a fancy paint brush. If ya wanna make art ya gotta start using the brush. PC are virtually foolproof so the chance of screwing up is very low.

I hope this helps. Have fun reading thru the archives. It's an amazing treasure chest of info.

See the review I just did for Paste Glaz in the "Review"section. It is so easy to apply you won't want to use a PC to apply or remove. It's like using butter on your car.

Have fun and don't eat the Paste Glaz, tho it's tempting.:xyxthumbs
