Paint overspray

I'm going to detail a truck for somebody in a week or so.. the only thing that I'm wondering about is that it used to be a work truck, and has paint overspray on it. It just looks like tiny white speckles all over it. so small that you don't notice them untill you get up close. The trucks paint is in ok shape, just a lil oxidised and swirled (nothing the pc can't handle)

Someone told me that laquer thinner can be used to take the overspray off, but won't hurt the trucks paint as long as you get it off pretty quick.. what do y'all think? should I give it a try, or just try to clay/buff them off (unlikeley, been on there for years)

Thanks,

Jimmie

Since your probably going to polish anyway just clay it first . Don't forget you can get a meduim grade clay that would work faster then the finer grade . Good luck

I just ordered some more clay as mine is on its last leg. I got the blackfire clay kit... think that will do it? or should I go through my detailing source and get something with a little more cut? I told the guy that I wasn't sure that I would be able to get ALL of it off.. so if I'm not able to, its not a HUGE deal, but I really don't want to dissapoint...

Check with Meguiar's or Pro Car Beauty online.

I believe they both carry different grade clays.

I know the Pro version does have a much

more agressive clay that can remove overspray.

Just be aware that you may have to do an

additional polishing step if you're doing it on

a dark paint.

Local bodyshop suppliers probably have these

on hand as well.

I'll go check with the detailer that I buy my supplies through... I'm already planning on going with ssr2.5, do I need to go with more cut than that after claying? or will that be plenty. I'm using an orange LC pad...

I think that IT DEPENDS on a few different factors if you'll be able to get the overspray off. What kind of paint is it? How long has it been on there. You might have to try a few different techniques before you find one that works...

I remember a post by Anthony Orosco about having to actually wetsand to remove some overspray. I don't think you want to get THAT involved.

If I were you, I would go through a normal routine of claying/polishing/finishing, and be satisfied if I didn't get the overspray out.

And don't use the paint thinner please!!!

Ill second the big no on Paint Thinner. It is not worth trynig to get overspray off with paint thinner. If it cant be removed with clay/polish procedure, then wet sand is the next option. Without a rotory, I dont think you would want to get that involved with removing all of the overspray. I would recommend megs heavy grade clay. It is so aggressive it will marr slightly. If you are going to use 2.5 afterwards it is no big deal.
