Oxidation Hell Any Tricks up your sleeves?

Hey Y'all.

1st time poster long time reader.

I have been detailing stuff for over 25 years now & while I know some products come & go I also know sometimes they come & I don't find out until much later.

Anyway here is my hell for the last week.

I Took on a Bay liner about a 25 footer & I guess I was happy for the work & missed how bad the oxidation was .

I wheeled it out with a heavy machine compound {orange & gritty} well the orange crap stained the fiberglass.

It literally sucked it in.

I put 2 coats of heavy cleaner wax on it & SLURP! sucked it in also.

So, Now ,I dash up On Saturday to the local Pro dealer & all he has is the orange stuff , this pink crap { a light compound for clear coat} & this "one shot foam stuff {the supplier recommends}

The Foam stuff did not work.

So I get the pink crap & start wheeling to death {myself}

Then I remembered I has a little of white fast cut ,so, I do the trouble spots to get the orange stains out .{most of it}

So Now at this point my arms are ready to fall out of their sockets & onto the deck.

I know my standards & It is not going to come out the way I like it.

Their has to be a better way.

So my Questions are is their a product that will remove the Oxidation off the fiberglass {other than good old fashion elbow grease}?

Do you have any Tricks And or procedures you would use in this situation?

I am open to suggestions.

Your going to need some kinda rocks in a bottle type compound to remove that mess. You also may wanna wetsand if you have expierence.I would first wash is using full strenght apc to remove as much as possible that way.Sounds like a mess you've gotten yourself into. Your gonna have to play rough with this bad boy :popcorn
 
I use Pro products a lot and always had luck with their RV Boat and Aircraft wax. Its abrasive for a wax and made to remove oxidation but if its as rough as you describe, it would still need to be compounded first.

I am not familar with that product. It will probally cost an extra $50 in shipping alone coming from Italy. Surely you being down in the heart of detailland there is a supplier that has something that will work for you :crazy2:

I haven't done any gel coats yet but been asking about how and the usual reply is Poorboy's World Polish With Carnauba. I have a 3M Super Duty rubbing compound part number 05954 that is rocks in a bottle but it's a tan colored stuff and might stain as well.
 
This is Becoming a burning hell now I e mailed PRO about the White fast cut ... Its discontinued.

No where can I find a white compound except for those little cans of No.7:passout:

Yes I am taking a beating I know the 1st boat of the year is always the hardest but this it stoopid on my part .
I was blinded by the petri dish the guts were in .
It was almost black!

Well all I keep getting local is 3M Super Duty.

I will keep going the way I have been & the next one I will be looking at Oh so much more closely.

Hell I will even do a test spot from now on....If I don't throw all my detailing equipment into a sink hole. :wall:wall:wall:wall:wall

I could not help but wonder about that stuff I posted. its kinda what I was asking & I answered myself , so I guess it matches me talking to myself LOL!.

But pretty neat stuff thou don't you think?

Ok To the hell boat.

I Hope to finish It good bad or what ever by Wednesday.

I figure if they did not know it was that bad then any improvement might slide by , NOT how I normally do things but 1 fudge in 2.5 decades ? maybe?

have you tryed 3M Perfect It 3? Its white and cuts pretty hard. I use it a lot for really bad correction jobs. Other than Black Pearl its my go to compound.
 
No I have not tried the perfect it I will keep all these in mind for the future.
I called the poor boys & did not get a reply yet.

Is it me or are my pictures not posting?
Do I need a hight post count ?

Well its more of churn & burn .

Its getting a shine back , not the best but a vast improvement over what it was.

I am hoping to finish tomorrow.
I am sick of looking @ this one I am 10 days so far..

Black Pearl is Car Brites high end correction line. Really good stuff. There's a thread here about it but my BlackBerry is acting ignorant and won't let me cut and paste the link to it. What kind of pad and machine are you using?
 
I am using Double sided wool .

Not a 3M 3+3 pad but similar.

For heavy compound I don't know of anything else that will take the abuse.

I was going to suggest wool if not. I checked out the pics. Nice boat but its definatly rough. Good luck with it.
 
Contact poorboys he is in the office 9-5 His pro-polish is what i would use.. or he even has a higher cut

I don't use my wheels that much.

Well the Oxidation Hell boat is done !!

13 days straight! I cowboy-ed up & kept burning away at it .

It such a nice feeling not to have to go back there.

The Customer said on a scale of 1 to 10 it came out to be a 9.5 .

Me? maybe 8.5 to 9.

Now its up to him to get me some more work,

I hope they are not as bad.

I will make surew I never do this again.


I have a Bob tail Harley to do on Tuesday the paint is nice but the bright work is tough..

There are all differant grades of foam pads. Some for cutting, polishing, final finish, and in between. Just me personally, I'm not big into compounding with a foam pad. I prefer to use wool with compound then follow up with polish and usually blue foam. If its a dark color ill go back with a glaze and a finishing pad to ensure the swirls are gone. There are plenty of folks who only use foam and achieve amazing results. I guess its all about personal preference. Reguardless, if you do any correction jobs these days foam pads are a must.
 
PB PwC is a great product but not one I would start with on a heavily oxidized boat.
Try Four Stars Cut and Polish to start if its still to oxidized for that then use their Heavy Cut compound next time. And I highly recommend their Aggressor 7.5 Inch Gelcoat Cutting Pad. Its a wool pad and works great.
Remember clear coat is no where near as thick or strong as gelcoat. You can treat a boat like a car.
 
pro wax i experiences in with as well i would use the ultimate cut or use 3M Perfect It, then use the RV Boat and Aircraft wax they carry. also Meguiars carry a nice rv,boat wax works better then pro. i have been finding myself growing out of pro products.
