Optimum No Rinse Wash impressions

Wait, if the dirt doesn't release from the mitt then what good is that? QEW releases dirt from the mitt to the bottom of the bucket under the grit guard. The dirt then can be dumped back on the ground from when whence it came.

IIRC the gallons of ONR are about £35 + delivery (so that is currently about $50-70 depending on exchange rate) which is perhaps equitable, but still not the greatest value shampoo around....

I used my Zymol sponge with it at the weekend, and had the LEAST comfortable ONR experience to date :nervous2: The Zymol sponge sounded like it was dragging across the paint, and had an almost 'sandpaper-like' sound :shocked The car was pretty clean TBH, and had sat in the rain for 2 days, so was well pre-rinsed  so I was fairly happy it wasn't dirt rubbing...

I was using the correct dilution rates for the first time but was desperate to add a bit extra for extra lubrication. I think however it is simply the noise the Zymol sponges seem to make on the paint, as they have an unusual consistency... I'll try my standard GS again next wash with the correct dilution.

My issue is that I just cant make 2 gallons of wash solution last for the entire car - a 9-3 convertible or A3 Sportback :hairpull I really wish I could somehow make it go a little further. I also just havent had quite the same quality results when I do the wheels. I think I need a little more practice to perfect the routine on both cars. It also seems important to have a 'workflow' worked out around your vehicle so you wash the right areas first and dont end up with ONR solution running over panels you already washed and dried :wall

There is a significant difference in the particle sizes. Bigger, aggressive particles will sink to the bottom of the rinse bucket, due to the water softening properties of ONR. However, ONR will bind the small dirt particles, which float in the water, like in a colloid (verbal illustration only), onto the wash media - hence the rinse water doesn't look as dirty but the mitt does - and when you change the dirty media, you will physically remove those particles from the process. Yes, the mitt will look dirty but this dirt is not aggressive, as the critical grit sinks to the bottom of the bucket. ONR can bind the very small floating particles to the mitt, but I think it is more than obvious.

For our friends across the pond, what is the price of ONR in the UK? What explination is given for the price diference form the distributors in the UK(I can understand a 15-20% price increase due to shipping costs, but the price here is $40 per gallon, so $50 would be reasonable). Possibly this can be of help as well Global Shipping of Detailing Supplies, Equipment and Products

I like that explanation Bence - makes sense :)

I can see where the OP is coming from and he isn't the first person I know who prefers QEW over ONR.

I've been using ONR (for my rinseless washes) for over a year and was pleased with the results. Back in August I had my streetrod over in Louisville and I couldn't find a coin-op wash near the motel so I decided to ONR it. When I dug through my bag of travel chemicals I saw where I had not switched out QEW with ONR yet. The bottom line is I was quite pleased with how QEW performed. I'll have to mix up a bucket of each to try at the same time to see which one I actually prefer, but QEW still performs well in my book.

I learned that the hard/expensive way. I used to double the recommended amount. There has been zero change in it's effectiveness since I started using it at the recommended dosages. It seems to leave a glossier finish when used at normal amounts, too. Hopefully Optimum will correct the dosage instructions on the gallon jug someday. Until then, I'm using a squeeze tube measuring cup to get the right amount.

Funny, I remember having that conversation with you previously, and you were adamant that adding more ONR would make it "even more slick".

Now do the right thing: publicly state, in big BOLD letters, that I was right and you were wrong! :grinno::p

I was right, and you were wrong!!!!

But seriously... Rob was right, and I was wrong.

Dr G knew what he was doing when he came up with the usage ratios; there doesn't seem to be much benefit to changing them unless you aren't using distilled or de-ionized water.

:nixweiss Look on the bright side, I had to buy a rotary to properly use Meguiars #105.

Can it be!?! The guy who could wax by hand faster than I could via PC is now not only using a Cyclo, but :gasp: a rotary?!? That's like Paul Bunyan using a steam powered logger! ;)

How do you like the rotary? Man am I out of it, I don't know what #105 is!

I picked up two grout sponges from Lowe's. I can't imagine liking using them, but I'll give 'em a whirl. I like sheepskin mitts for washing. Maybe I'll try the multi-mitt idea. I will say, the car does look very glossy considering all I did was wash it (drag dirt around on it). ;)

To those with suggestions like using more mitts, the sponges, etc, thanks. To those who got personally offended because someone had a different experience or opinion than you, well I'm glad it could be me!

Ouch! Not a very Autopian-like comment.

Apologies. It came across wrong.

My point was it seems like the OP has already made up his mind about the product and all of these replies aren't going to convince him otherwise. His response to the suggestions of changing his wash media pretty much convinced me of that. Not to mention where he went above and beyond to claim he felt "ripped off" and mixing some $5 fabric softner would have the same effect.

Welcome to Autopia, right? In order to use this new wash stuff, I need to get some new wash sponges! Can I use my existing towels?? Is it ok my garage floor is ugly concrete?

...

Thanks for the suggestions. The offer to trade is for real though if anyone is local. While maybe my experience will be much more favorable with a different wash media, I have no complaints about QEW (well except the customer service incident) and can use that with my current wash media. ;)

Sounds like a classic case of not being able to teach an old dog new tricks...

Sometimes, it's a good thing to hear another point of view (improper use or not).

And that applies to many other fields...

Agreed.

Don't worry, I can still wax faster by hand than you can with a PC.

Rotary rocks for correcting hard paint, #105 is like rocks in a bottle. Meguiars rates it a 12 in aggressiveness on their 1-10 scale.

I am still buying some when I make my next AG order! Id like to get rid of my water tank and pump.

What do you guys use to clean engines when you do an ONR wash because you dont have water to use?

I'm an avid archer and gun enthusiast, so I'm printing this one up and hanging it on the wall in the garage. Thanks for the laugh!

Sorry about the coffee Supe. I hope it wasn't an $8 cup o Starbucks, hehe. Glad you liked the pic though.
