Onr

Only time I have had a problem with ONR is when I used the Schmitt with it. Otherwise its great on light dirty vehicles. I just got done using it no less than 10 mins ago!

SuperBee, the correct dilution is 1 ounce to 2 gallons of water. As I was saying, maybe you should up the ONR to prevent marring. Was 1 ounce/2gallons the approximate dilution you were using before?

It was two capfuls from the gallon jug of ONR, which is what the label said... but it sure didn't look like it was an entire ounce of product; the cap on that jug is very shallow. It looked more like about half an ounce... I'll double that next time.

SpoiledMan, thanks for the pointers on that grout sponge. Now if I can just get out of Home Depot without spending a hundred bucks.... I really shouldn't go there without adult supervision.

I had no idea.... what's the correct dilution in "gallon capfuls"?? I'll probably end up getting some one-ounce-per-pump jug pumps, but til then it would be nice to know the correct dilution.

If you look at the label, on the bottom, it states the size (32 fl oz) so Optimum got lazy and made just one label for both the 32 oz bottle and the gallon jug (128 fl oz.)

When I noticed the discrepancy with the label, I measured what 2 of the gallon capfuls came out to be, and I don't remember the exact number, but 2 "gallon capfuls" did not equal 1 fl oz It was something more along the lines of 1/2 a fluid oz.

Since then, I found some old measuring cups laying around the house that was once used for measuring photographic fluids. They're a nice size and allows me to pour into and out of the cup easily. Other people have had good luck with those small plastic cups you get with Nyquil, etc.

Anytime! I mix ONR about 1.25 oz per 2 gallons. While in Phoenix last summer that simply didn't work. I ended up mixing about twice as much ONR or 2.5 oz per 2 gallons.

SuperBee364, I'm glad that you figured out that your ONR mix wasn't enough. Maybe you can try the ONR again and tell us how it worked out? Even though I know ONR works well, I'd still be happy if you found that you didn't have any more marring with the correct dilution :)

I have found that I actually get more marring from traditional washes rather than from ONR. The difference is in the technique. With ONR, there is no rushing and no cutting corners. I carefully use a wool mitt and plush microfiber to dry every time. It is much easier to rush through a traditional wash.

Wheel wells do suck with ONR. But then wheel wells suck period. When I use ONR, I use a separate gallon bucket of soapy water (and one to rinse) and come out with great results.

Also, superbee's marring may have come from beginner's technique (amount of pressue applied and so on). I do commend you for trying the product. Good luck!

i spray down the panel with megs last touch mixed 1:1 before using ONR - no marring that I can tell. I use a grout sponge and MF towels.

when I used to use a chennile mitt and WW towels, it would mar like crazy

I have one set of customers who prefer I hose wash their cars. The big boss wasn't convinced 13 years ago when I first started cleaning his cars that QEW was safe and he wanted to see a lot of water and suds on his cars. Of course, his partner and the employees at their office all follow the big guy. They had a reverse-osmosis/deionizer set-up at their office so it really wasn't a big deal since after washing, I could flood the paint with water and then let them air dry. Now they are in a new office and as of yet, no RO set-up. The CFO and secretary have both decided I can wash their cars with ONR now, and both admit their cars are just as clean and actually have better slickness.

Otherwise, no problems at all. People know I have been in business a long time and wouldn't be if my washing method was messing up cars. In addition, I have had several customers who prefer to wash their own cars (and call me out just for details) purchase ONR.

I use ONR for about half my washes these days (only reason I don't do it on all of them is because I feel conventional washes give me a better feeling for product durability, and I am testing some products now) and am very happy with it. I do notice a bit of marring on soft black paint, but then again, *anything* will marr this paint (BMW Black). Quicker and easier than a conventional wash and seems to enhance the shine of the paint after washing.

Thanks everyone for the help! It would appear that my problems most likely are to blame on too weak of an ONR mix. I never woulda figured that out without you guys.

I used distilled water on that wash, but I do plan on using tapwater next time. The water in SLC is among the hardest in the country. Even harder than Phoenix's, so I guess I'll just plan on mixing it at about 3 ounces of ONR per 2 gallons of agua. I'll still need to get one of those gallon jug pumps, though. I don't dare use my NyQuil cup... I'm sure I'd get up in the middle of the night and knock back a shot of ONR...

Mikebai1990- I'll be sure and post a play by play of the next wash when I finally get back into town tomorrow evening.

I read a while back that someone put plain water in a small garden sprayer and pre-sprayed the whole car prior to using the ONR so that the water would encapsulate the dust (like a quick rain does) He swears by this method!

Yea, I suppose water by itself can encapsulate some of the dust, but mixing some ONR into that spray can work better at pulling the dirt particles from the paint into solution and thus preventing unnecessary marring.

FWIW, I use a 1 gallon pump sprayer and presoak every panel before I ever touch it with the wash solution and media. I don't think I can bring myself to use ONRWS without first presoaking. I check my paint religously for marring, and after months of ONRWS and a couple traditional washes (at least once a week, three at most), I have a few scratches on the hood. I love ONR.
