Oh, so you're a Detailer? You work for a dealership?

Dude thats bad! The BMW dealership here pays an outside detailer to prep their cars for the show room and lot and let me tell you they all look like that, not that bad but I've actually told the Manager whoever works on the paint needs to learn to polish cause they look like crap. I think I'm going to ask to get a part time job there fixing the crap polish jobs this place gives.

Almost forgot, I would have beat him:bat I may have landed myself in jail but if I would have put him in his place it would have been worth it.

C'mon. Your being too tough on the poor little hack "detailer" I love those guys. They help me make tons of money.

Love that video, I need to make a few of those! Nice.

yesterday i offered to detail someones car from one of our vendors, she asked how much and i gave her the rundown, she said o i can have my car polished and done for 50 bucks from the guy at the dealership. i just let it go at that point.

All in fun bro. ;)

I know. :)

I lived in Minneapolis for a couple years and if it weren't for my wife and family I would still be there. It was fun going to Viking parties being the only Packer fan!

All the dealerships in my area are getting bought out by one guy, which is putting the general car buyer on edge. You practically cannot buy a new vehicle within 50 miles without going through this dealership. Parts prices have jumped 20% and all their recon vehicles are 'detailed' through his huge used car lot in town.

The sales manager that had me under contract was actually a decent guy and knew that his cars needed a better quality detail than the GM lot down the street, which is why he paid me what he did. He even told me he didn't want to cut me loose because he didn't trust the other detail guys. I have since talked to some of the guys working there and they all say they hate doing cars that come from that lot because they are so picky.

Sad thing is, most of the people I have talked to here that need dealership correction details aren't willing to swallow the fact that they need to pay someone even more money to fix the poor work they already paid for. I personally see a new Charger all the time that called me for a quote to fix the horrible holograms but he never made an appointment because he didn't want to pay more money to get it fixed.

I'm sure I could get tons of business from correcting dealership hack work, but I'd have to cut my prices in half to get them to even consider it and that's just not going to happen.

Just to throw a contrarian spin on this thread- years ago, Stoddard Imported Cars had a guy who was good enough to do *my* vehicles pre-delivery. Yeah, I made 'em better, but it wasn't like I was refusing delivery over anything he did (did refuse it over other stuff upon occasion ;) ) and he gave 'em to me nice enough that I just drove 'em until they needed rewaxed.

Not the case these days though..he finished grad school and went on to his real profession :sadwavey:

That sorta happened in my area, a few guys own most everything. And it's a big part of why I patronize an Audi dealer who's nearly two hours away ;)

We were just up there last week, and I'll say that even though every vehicle needed some correction, at least there were no horror-shows.

A pal of mine bought an A4 from another Audi dealer and sent it to Stoddard over cosmetic issues like we're discussing on this thread (no, I did *NOT* offer to fix it for him :grinno: ). They did a pretty good job, really improved it at the very least and left it nice enough that I wouldn't be embarassed in it.

Just goes to show you that you have to be a Grad shool level detailer to pacify your high expections. :grinno:

David Fermani- Actually, IMO the same traits that were behind his decisions regarding his education and career were a big part of why he did good detailing work. He was simply an admirable guy in every respect. I doubt he ever half-@$$ed anything in his life.

We then got into a discussion on how much I charge for a detail and he replied, "Wow, you're really ripping people off."

:argue

He walked away laughing and it took all my strength to not throw a wrench at the back of his head.

I seem to remember a "detailer" here on Autopia claiming they some of us are ripping people off as it takes us more then 6 hours to do a full correction exterior. :grinno:

This place has a tendancy of changing people's thought process on detailing & paint correction and can certainly humble many that seem to know it all.

Some...but not all :sadpace:

But the operative word there was "SEEM" ;)

I have worked for a dealership that was pretty understanding about time. The problem here though isn't the detailer. They truely don't know any better. there taught one way and thats it. Several years back when I first learned the guy who was my biggest influence said to me. I'm gonna show you how to do it the right way. once you learn that I'm gonna show you the money way. In this field I hate to say it. Most people truly don't care about a fully corrected car. In our line of work I woud have to say the smartest of them when it comes to making money is the tunnel guys. They make the most. I know of several guys who have high volume shops that make a ton of money in my town. There hacking up 200 plus cars a week, with 10 - 15 employees and of to the auction they go. I had this conversation the other night with a very respected detailer. HOw are we making money? is it easier to wash and wax a car? or is it easier to perfect a car and probaly lose a little in the end. If your in this business full time you have to learn to make money. Funny thing is we sit here and ***** about all this as that hack makes money and the dealership gets richer. Then the tunnel guy gets even richer? Is throwing the wrench at this kid needed? Or is educating him on the proper aspects of the business a better way to do it?

Well said Barry. There is a lot to think about when trying to apply Autopian standards to the world at large. Not everybody is in it for the art, or the challenge, or the love of cars. This here is a small community, and while we can b***h about how we would do it differently, Autopians are still a minority.

But in the end, the kid was a douche. So yes, he deserves the wrench.

Bryan your the master of taking words out of context and twisting them to fit your own jealous little needs. You really should check into therapy or something to see if you can somehow find a way past all this negitve attitude you seem to have on here. Maybe once you actually have a little intellegence and can see past your own ego you'll find the right words and see the meaning behind it. You obviously lack basic social skills and are only here to cause trouble anymore... I feel for you man because you do have some great skills. I wouldn't personally call you the best like so many others have but you are really good. If you'd only change your petty little attitude about everything and realise you're seriously NOT god's gift to detailing like you seem to feel you are you'd go so much farther in this world.

To the rest of the board. I'm sorry Bryan keeps trying to aggitate me and draw me into some sort of net argument to make himself feel better about himself or something. I hate wasting space on this site dealing with him so I tend to ignore most of his snide little jibs he likes to toss out. But I felt he's being going unchecked long enough. 99% of the stupid comments he makes are directed at me in case anyone cares. Please feel free to ignore his post as I tend to for the most part anymore.

There's been people critizing folks for taking their time on details long before you joined Jake. I actually ripped on people at 1st until I changed my customer focus. You spent how long on that car...???? I'm eating crow now big time.

I kinda like these differences in opinion conflicts. Makes for interesting discussion as long as tempers don't get too flared. People need to be more honest on here IMHO. Way too much sugar coated opinions.

LOL true dave... And I think we all know I'm not much for suger coating.... But in this instance I know exactly what bryan is trying to quote... It's not a big deal. I still have a lot of respect for his skills.. I just wish he would find something else to focus his energies on ya know.... get's rather boring after awhile.
