NXT topped with WG , a big no no !

I decided to experiment on my dad's car:

BEFORE:

I tried WG SG over NXT.. A Big NO ! NO !

Here's what i did..

I hit the paint with the usual DACP for some stubborn swirls, (Sonus Orange Pad)

then

Poorboys SSR2.5 for medium ones (Sonus Pad Green) and to give it some "pop"

I then layered NXT paste wax by hand and left it for about 15mins..

A big No ! No!

After about 15mins it becomes a dry dusty haze to remove. It filled my MF towel with it and required a HELLUVA lot of elbow grease. Was very tough to remove. Then after all the removal, I had to break out my california duster as dust particles were everywhere.. What a pain !

I then decided to employ the "wax on wipe off" method (WOWO) for the second coat of NXT and it did wonders ! I applied it by hand in smaller sections, waited about 30secs to 1minute and it appeared to "rub in" better and smoother. I did not let it dry to a haze and I noticed it gave greater "pop" So after 2 coats of NXT .. 1 to haze and then 1 with WOWO method.

NXT by hand x 2:

Then I went for a WG topper..

A Big No ! No !

I applied a nice thin coat of WG SG by hand, and within seconds, the WG SG stuck to the NXT like "Glue" A chemical adhesion education did i get! I kid you not ! I had to rub and rub like never before. It was like having to remove residual glue left on from the 80's !!!!

I thought my hands were going to fall off. Similar to the elbow grease of leaving #16 on too long or Klasse SG. My arms almost fell off.

After I finally removed it one section of the hood thankfully, i said no more WG for this process.

I decided to top it with Pinnacle Souveran. Ooooh, this went on easy and removed easy. It gave the paint a much deeper look IMO. WOWO method as well.

NXT topped with Pinnacle Souveran:

So in the end, my recommendations:

Apply NXT , and then remove immediately with the WOWO method.

The longer it sits, the worse it will be to remove.

Do not top with a sealant like WG.

But rather a good carnuba. or Don't top it at all if its a light coloured car.

So in the spirit, of Autopia, I simply wanted to experiment, :D

My stages:

DACP x 1 (Sonus Orange Pad, speed 4-5)

SSR2.5 x 1 (Sonus Green Pad speed 4-5)

NXT x 2 (by hand)

Pinnacle Souveran x 1 (by hand)

Thats very strange as I have had no problems at all removing NXT. I usually let it sit for about 15 mins until it is completely hazed. I then remove with a the PC and MF bonnet over a Megs 8006 pad. :nixweiss

A well deserved, final outcome :up

I love the shot of the Caddy hood, doesn't look all that different than my '89 deVille's ( but mine's white)

Is that an '85-'88? Could you post a shot of the entire car?

You didn't apply the NXT to a hot surface did you? I've never had that result with NXT. Did you do this outdoors in the sun?

I used NXT paste for the first time last weekend, and it's a bear to get a thin coat down on the car. I tried several types of applicators (two foam, one MF), and nothing would put down a thin layer. The resulting residue was difficult to remove with a normal poly MF, but yielded to a natural-fiber CBT pretty well (still took a little elbow grease, but nothing to cause a panic).

Next time, I'll try applying by machine (my preferred method for #16 as well). There aren't many Meg's products that I care for, but I will give them credit for putting their paste waxes in tins that are wide and shallow. 4" spot pads fit down in there no problem, so I'll give the PC a whirl next time I try the NXT paste.

Slightly off topic, but is NXT paste a wax or a sealant?

Is the liquid NXT the sealant and the paste a synthetic wax?

I can not recall in 40 years a paste type sealant. Pretty cool if Meguiars has invented a new sealant system.

Nice work on the Caddy Montoya. :bow

Bill D - its an '88 and sorry no full car pics..

Beason - nope.. thin, thin thin..

jfelbah - not hot whatsoever, was cool

blkz28Conv - nxt paste wax it was

blkZ28Conv,

It's a paste version of the NXT sealant; no carnauba.

Oh, another datapoint . . . montoya had problems with WG and NXT interacting somehow, right? If I read the original post correctly, the WG was applied immediately after the 2nd coat of NXT, and that might be the problem

I applied UPP (which I've always thought to be rather similar to WG) over my NXT application a couple of days later, and it seemed to work fine. No problems with the application or residue removal. I wonder if montoya's problem was because the NXT was still curing?

Just a thought,

I always leave Wolfgang to sit for 30 - 60 mins and it wipes straight off. I have used it over NXT and not had any problems. ( Like others always after 12-24 hours though).

Bingo! The NXT hadn't finished curing and the NXT/WG layers reacted to yield the sticky problem.

It has to be the same sealant, but I have thought about this too. I don't know why would you want a sealant in paste form, makes it so much harder if you want to apply it by machine. Of course a paste makes sense for a carnauba, but I would like to know why Megs produced the paste for NXT since it is a sealant.

Maybe it is for the ordinary customer who is used to buying a paste, not knowing a sealant in liquid form is the same thing.
