Nissan GTR Assembly Line Detailing

Definitely Porsche territory in more ways than one. I read its lap times are faster than all but three production cars in the world around a road course. They said for the money, you are getting a world class car.

I know what article you're talking about. They ran the GT-R on the Nurburgring against a Porsche GT3 and outran it by a few seconds. HOWEVER, the engineers who conducted the test were quoted as saying they did in fact run the GT-R with slicks. Which makes a HUGE difference on a road course like the 'Ring'. Every other manufacturer's claimed time from the ring are from production trim vehicles with production tires.

No doubt this car has the technology and raw power to turn amazing lap times, but the car is down considerable power and up considerably on weight, to the Carrera GT they claim it can outrun on the ring (albeit with slicks).

Fast car...Yes. Bang for your buck...Damned right. Revolutionary.....not really. World Beater....Not at all.

Having said that, they'll probably sell every one they make for the first few years until the competition catches up or passes them.

Because you didn't say spot-sanded or wet-sanded/polished defects.

Now with your statement above I can see what you mean, but can you see where a few folks might think you ment otherwise. If not its no big deal. :ignore

That's what I thought you meant. I think many/most cars are spot sanded/buffed to fix defects. Nothing special about that.

I guess I don't get the GT-R? 470hp, 3,800 lbs, and $80k? :nixweiss

that's seems like an extream amount of compltely wasted time. Car manufactures aren't in the biz to pretty up assembly line cars. It's build them and get them out ASAP. Cool to watch but highly unproductive and wasteful.

Not really. Japanese auto manufacturing has used TQM in the production of cars for years now. If you get it right the first time, you spend less time/money on rework and waste and the customer is more satisfied in the end.

Ford damn sure didn't do that on my car....:down

Beleive it or not, if your car had a scratch or a spot that needed attention. They would wetsand it before it goes out. Like david said all auto makers do this to an extent.

LOL for $70,000+ it should be perfect?? Hardly Do not compare a car that goes down an assembly line with workers making a pitence in pay to a high end exotic that is hand built by people that love their jobs and have real passion for the high end exotics. If it's an assembly line car weather it's $10,000 or $100,000 rest assured it's not perfect and they couldn't care less about someone willing to shell out that kind of money for it. 99% of the workers just care about their health benifits and a paycheck at the end of the week. I'll garuntee you (because I've worked in such places) they will not treat a $100,000 car any different than that $10,000 econobox going down the line. to them it's all just day in day out same ol same ol. And don't go fooling yourself they think any different about it because of the window sticker.

But I sure think they have a little more passion about it, due to the face that it is Nissan's best sports car. Which in turn I think yields for a better built vehicle.

ferrari's go down an assembly line does that mean they dont care about the cars? Every place uses and assembly line maybe short of bugatti.

What exactly is being argued here? Are you telling us that the Nissan GTR is not a perfectly built car? I don't think anyone here is saying it is.

And how can you be so confident in the notion that someone who works on an assembly line has less passion for their job than someone who hand builds exotics?

There are literally a thousand variables that fit into job/employee satisfaction. Someone can be driven to be a great worker by anything from an actual passion for cars to a desire to have been part of the creation of something complicated. Some of the outputs of work are indeed a paycheck and benefits, but internal and external motivation and employee equity have a greater influence on employees and why they like or dislike their jobs.

I think if any of the members here do production line work and are very proud of the car they build (whether it be a Ferrari or a Civic), then you pretty much just insulted them.

Wow, and I thought I was the one accused of having my shorts in a bunch. Sounds to me like you are talking about a big three plant...which is probably why the big three are going down the dumper (as is the rest of mfg. and our national greatness because no one gives a crap, especially the MBA CEO's and the gov't which is full of MBA CEO types now, including W.).
