hi! just got my new DW443. What pads can i use for this? It has a 6-inch velcro backing plate.

what pads can i buy for this tool? what diameter? thanks!

You can get a 4 3/4 inch backing plate and then use the 6.5 pads. A lot of people prefer the 6.5 pads over the larger ones now days.

I'm pretty sure you're correct about the BP. After reading other reviews on the 443 it doesn't seem that you can swap it for a different size.

What you want in a pad size is one that is a little larger in diameter than your BP. You also want the Velcro on the pad to extend past the BP...... if not then the BP will tend to chew up the foam where there isn't any Velcro. The "old" style LC pads were bad about that because the Velcro did not cover the whole back of the pad, it was only about 12.5 cm in diameter. I think the newer 6.5" LC pads will work with a 6" BP.

On Danse's web-site it lists the 6.5" LC pads as usable with either a 5" or 6" BP. He also sells a 7.5" pad designed for a 6" BP, but they are the variable contact style pads that you may or may not like. You might want to e-mail Danase and see what he says. I think an 8" pad might be too large and tend to bog down. There are other members here who use the 443 so maybe they'll see this and reply with what size/brand pad they use.

Not so, all the common polishers, your DW, the Hitachi, the Makita, the rotary PC, the Metabo and the Fein, all have the very same 5/8 inch threaded shaft so they all take aftermarket rotary backing plates.

So you're fine. You want the smaller backing plates, you can buy them. If the backing plate fits one rotary, it fits all rotaries. They all have the same thread pitch too.

John, I don't think that is the case with the DW443. I was thinking about picking one up at one time and remember reading that the BP on that unit is held on with 4 screws. This is an orbital, not a rotary, and if you read the following thread post #15 mentions the 4 screws that attach the BP:

archerwin, the above thread is a pretty good review of the 443.

Eliot Ness,

thanks! I read that thread already that's why I gave DW443 a try since PC is not available here. thanks again!

Thanks for keeping me honest John. I was thinking of the rotary, not the random orbital, not that I could have paid attention to the model #.

.. i want one now! It sounds like it has a lot more power than the PC.

If I (ever) reach that point I will be going for Feintools one.

On the other hand, if once in a while one has situation where PC with 6.5" pads is not strong enough why switch whole tool, why not just use 4" pads for that situation, it would be cheaper (unless person does this for a living so time is money)?

Nahh, i think will get a rotary instead. 4" pads scare me. I think if i were to get them then they would have to be EDGE pads.

BTW..IIRC automagic sells a backing plate for the 443

well, i have played with a rotary before. I have not played with 4" pads before, and that one thread where the pads glue melted kind of scared me.
