New M105 is kicking but w/ KB method

I've yet to be disappointed. Playing around with the new Optimum Finish via rotary too. The look is at least as good as Ultrafina but I don't yet know what the tipping point is for hologram removal with it. OF doesn't seem to leave holograms when used on its own (as does UF), just not yet sure what level of holograming it is capable of permanently removing.

Accumulator, my good man, you still haven't tried UF and a rotary?? Don't make me fly out there to Ohio....:waxing:

Heh heh, you could come and finish the M3, that way it'd actually get *DONE*. Yeah..that's it, I'll challenge one of you rotary-Meisters to show me how it's done with that thing as the test case :D

And if you're ever out this way you gotta *drive* so my painter can do your door. And we can burnish that MOPAR of yours with the Cyclos and some of the stuff *I* like :D Then we could side-by-side the two approaches and see what's what. (And then I'd still say "well, that's on *your* paint" :chuckle: )

Heh heh...see, I have plenty of come-backs to the "you still haven't.." quips ;)

But seriously, as I alluded to on the other M105/KB thread, I'm just not gonna be doing enough corrections in this lifetime to feel I need to go there rotary-wise unless I can't get the desired results any other way.

Man, there's just *no way* I'm ever gonna use a rotary for something I can do via Cyclo. Simply a matter of *really* liking one machine and *not* liking the other(s). If I were really missing out on something that might be different, and I'm keeping open to the whole idea, hence my on-going interest in the topic.

For *now* at least, I'm happy with how things are going with the non-rotary finishing.

Well, I certainly *can* imagine that with the green pads. Even the Cyclo white pads are a bit aggressive for so-called "finishing pads" and I sometimes use softer ones even on the Audis. Yeah...I can see just so many variables here. Back when the green pads were all they made for the Cyclo you could only get things to a certain level with it.

The way rotary finishing with Ultrafina has worked for you almost tempts me to try it ;)

What size pads were you using on the PC for that? Even the rule-of-thumb 20 lbs. of pressure can seem a bit much with larger pads.

I think they are 6.75, but they have the scalloped edge. Patrick at excel used to sell them as the P2 pads. ABC american buffing company was the producer of them and they quit making them. ultimate microfiber was the only company left who had them. I got 5 a month ago. I attempted to order 5 more last week and they are now sold out. :sadpace:

The velcro went all the way to the edge of the pad, they where the most durable pads that I have ever used. IMO perfect for this task.

So far I have no complaints about the finish that I am getting with M205/PC and either a white pad on harder clears or a gray on softer clears. Maybe tomorrow I will break out some UF and my rotary when I finally get the M35 finished out.

This fall, you may just be surprised by who/what you find on your doorstep! I'm seriously thinking about taking my 'bee back east to get some "go fast" mods done to the engine. It wouldn't be much of a detour to stop by your place. And to get my door done by your painter... well.. that would be worth *any* length of detour. If this should happen, I'll be sure to bring you some.... ummmm..... let's just say "Wax". :chuckle:

And I totally understand about the comfort zone thing. While I'm all ears to this new technique, it's going to have to be a real improvement for me to get out of my comfort zone. That being m105 with PFW followed by a menz finishing polish with finishing wool or UF with finishing foam.

You're always welcome my friend :D

Oh, and since you mentioned finishing wool, I've been wondering how M105 would work with that...by Flex 3401 that is.

Eh..I might need pretty potent hologram removal if I were to finish that way. How's the working time? I've only used OP (v2.0 I think) and it's long work time drove me nuts (even via rotary), it was a good example of what I *don't* like, compared to something like M105 v1.0 which I tooK to right away.

More generally, Scott, after all the work you did *by hand*, and the way you kept an open mind regarding machines (and BTW I enjoyed my little role in getting you on the machine-polishing bandwagon), believe me, when *you* rave about doing stuff all-rotary I pay attention!

And yeah, if I had to deal with different paints/situations I could very well change my tune regarding what machines work to my satisfaction. I will say that until I got the Flex 3401 I absolutely agreed that it took rotary work to get most vehicles to my satisfaction, I just needed that extra bit with the Cyclos/etc. to get the none-too-bad holograms out 100%.

Heh heh, the way I'm miscommunicating on some of these threads I fear I'm coming across as some dolt..I'm not too worried about whether I *could* get things sorted out with the rotaries and Ultrafina, but honestly I simply don't like using 'em compared to the Cyclos and I'm just not gonna do stuff I hate unless I have a mighty compelling reason. If I ever park one of my rides next to an identical one and find mine lacking, well...then I might have to try something different after all!

Hey, that's interesting! Big pads that weren't bogging the PC under pressure, and still had some cut; those must've been great. Too bad they're apparently off the market now. Yeah, some pads simply wear like iron, and it's not always the pad that you'd *expect* to last that long.

The new Optimum products, Compound, Polish II and Finish have shorter working times and more cut than the originals. If I am not mistaken I believe the good Doctor is also using non-diminishing abrasives now as well. OPII leaves minimal holograms on soft paints via rotary and a polishing pad, so either the Finish or Ultrafina should be able to remove the holograms.

It did take me a while to embrace machine polishing but I swear by the rotary being able to give the best possible finish when used correctly.

X2.

Thanks for your time and effort putting this together to help others out and learn. :woot:

Scott, is that a fact?

Optimum also uses non-diminishing media? Maybe Anthony Orosco can support?

I'd give them a go side by side with M105/M205 to find "mecca".

ScottWax- Thanks for the info on the new Optimum stuff. It's not like I have a closed mind about it or anything. Ditto on the finishing via rotary, not that I'm convinced it's necessary on my vehicles.

Oh, and on another thread (I think it was a different thread, these all sorta start running together in my mind..) I saw where you were commenting on hazing on A-pillars/etc. when using the PC/not the rotary and I thought to myself, again, that it's just just a whole 'nother universe for you pros compared to somebody like me. Heh heh, if a vehicle doesn't respond well to my favored techniques I can just replace/repaint it (well, the Jag excepted and it's lacquer is past its polishing-days anyhow).

Amen to that, i am getting into this whole detail scene, but i have placed an 800$ order on hold. I am waiting to see how the flex would work with this method also before i completely place my order. :ignore

Any update to the paper Kevin was writting about his method? Or has it already been posted and I missed it?

Thanks

Zoning in on it...

Worked on it until 3 a.m. this morning.

REALLY trying to wrap this thing and post by mid-week.

If I can get it all organized and proofed by a couple people, it will be posted Tuesday or Wednesday.

Sorry for the delays.

The saying 'life happens' rings true!

It will not go up until it's final proofed and critiqued.

No worries Mr Brown. Take your time and make sure it is perfect, I know a lot of people are anxiously awaiting it.

Thanks for all you are doing!!!!!

Thanks everyone for the great advise on the thread and Kevin a big thanks to you for this awesome method. I spoke briefly with weekendwarrior about the method and can not wait for him to show me first hand.

yeah most definitely, take your time.

its better to be slow but perfect than fast and have a bunch of mistakes

Just want to make sure he did not publish his paper yet and I haven't missed it?

Im sure it will be the talk of the site when he does so I dont think I missed it yet. :spot
