New Cyclo Backing Plates

I was at the detailer that sponsors my car club over the weekend (same place that got me hooked on the cyclo) and they had new backing plates for the cyclo. I have never seen them before but they were traditional backing plates (I'm guess 3.5") red plastic material and considerably flatter then the what the cyclo comes with. It was cwertainly better and easier to remove pads and to center them. He mentioned that the pads no longer touch in the middle....etc etc....My question is if anyone has seen them. I just tried searching the internet and I can't find them anywhere. Does anyone know where I can pick them up?

Worse case scenario I can always ask them where they grabbed them from. If no one has seen or tried these, I would even try to get a group buy going for them if at all possible.

Whew I was afraid of getting flamed and having everyone be like...USE THE SEARCH feature! LOL Glad I'm not going crazy!

Yeah I watched them use the machine with the backing blates for a lil bit. Seemed much easier! He said it became even more balanced too! As much as I love the cyclo, removing pads is a PITA with those rubber boots they provide! I will swing by the shop again over the weekend and see where they can be purchased. I think he said they were around $20 for the pair.

DOH! GBACKUS with the info! Nice!

If you think the Cyclo brand velcro is bad, you oughta try the old-school slip-on (more like "wrestle on") pads! I used those for years before the velcro ones came out and they were an incredible hassle. After those, the velcro ones seemed fine to me (and they last forever), but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to try something better :D

LOL I have a tendency to not be so delicate when changing pads so holding the velcor piece down while trying to take the pad off just irritates me at times! The "stock" rubber pads for the cyclo remind me of the old man isotoners for dress shoes! LOL

After a little bit of thought, couldn't you just buy the small backing plates like at excel, and just screw them into the cyclo? FWIW, I just tried to unscrew the pads that came with the cylco, and they don't seem to want to budge.

The thread is the exact same as the PC. SO any backing plate should work just fine. ;) Just be sure and keep an eye on to make sure it doesn't come un screwed ever. Personally, I like to use the Cyclo brand pad holder but I have customers who use the PC screw on types as well. :)

Bob,

Can't believe I saw this thread! I just finished wrestling those holders on! Looks like another order is coming your way... :xyxthumbs

So I need to apply more force to get the OEM plates off?

Craig, I have a wrench to get the pads off if you need. If you want your own then head over to a tool place and take your Cyclo as the wrench has to be thin enough.

Those should come with a wrench supplied with the Cyclo. Sort of like how the PC plates come off.

Stop bringing up painful memories!!!! :nono

RCBuddha- Now that you have them on, I wouldn't be in any huge hurry to try something else. I probably will just because I like to mess around with the Cyclo. It's not like I have any issues with the Cyclo brand velcro holders...

And yeah, get/find the thin flat wrench to hold the spindles while you unscrew the pad holders. I wrote "CYCLO" on mine with a Sharpie (and "PC" on the one for that) so I could spot it easily in the tool drawer.

Diesel1- Heh heh, that "Isotoners" thing cracked me up.

3Dog- Yeah, "painful memories" is right, literally! I keep some of the old slip-on pads around just so I can point to them and say [old codger voice] "back when *I* was young you had to wrestle these things on all the time, made a man outta ya" :chuckle:

Accumulator,

I had tried Spoiledman's cyclo with the backing plates, and it sure was pretty nice. I'll give the cyclo holders a shot, but I just *feel* better having backing plates.

However, are the plates that are on the cyclo now supposed to be super tight? I can't get them to budge. I don't wanna apply too much pressure to the wrench that comes with it, I'm afraid if I pry too hard, I'll groove the spindles or bend the wrench. Any thoughts?

OK, I understand completely that some setups just feel better to some people, I'm the same way about a lot of stuff.

The plates on my Cyclos have never been that tight but then I've always been taking them off to put on the brushes or something. But your situation sounds a little weird

What I do is put the wrench on the hex spindle, hold it in place, and turn the *head*. IMO the threaded spindle mounted in the head is really in there, if you some how twist it apart I'd be amazed. And if that did happen, I'd send it back to the seller as something would almost *have* to be amiss. So turn the head, not the wrench and don't be afraid to put some muscle into it (oh man, doesn't *that* sound like famous last words :o ).

edit...... :o After putting a little more effort into it, and a lot of taunting by a friend (shut up chris! lol! :sign ), I got my stock pads off. I'm now ready for my new backing plates! :woot:

Now this is what Arnold was talking about when he said "girly men!" :rofl :p

I ordered some 3.5" backing plates from Danase, and here they are installed:

Let me know what you think of the new set up.
