New 745li . . .

<strong class='bbc'>Having an S500, ML 320 I feel I can speak of Mercedes. I also have a 98 BMW 740iL and 98 550iL (the Mercedes are 02 and 9 respectively). I just purchased the new 745i. I must say that there is absolutely no comparision. The Mercedes have by far the more inferior workmanship My S500 has been at the dealership more often than it has been with me. That's ok, because it can spend time with my ML 320. The list of problems with my ML is so long I don't think there is enough space on the internet to go into it. By contrast, with the exception of the 750, none of the BMWs have required any service other than routine maint. The 750iL went in for wheel vibration and after 2 attempts at the dealership it was determined to be a bad tire which they replaced at no cost. I have never had the quality of service from Mercedes as I have had with BMW. BMW comes and picks up my vehicles for oil changes and alike. They even put a new gas cap on my 95 740i that I apparently lost at no charge. Mercedes charges me for everything. They have even tried to charge me for items that were under warranty. I have heard that there were quality problems with Mercedes but I thought they were isolated only to the ML. Apparently this is not the case. Clearly BMW is in a class all by themselves. Mercedes needs to change there reputation and vehicles. I can tell you at $115,000 this is a mistake I will not make again in a long time. I mention this because I own them and I have had to deal with them. Unless you actually own these vehicles making a comparison is definitely not based on facts. As I have read through this thread it is apparent that some folks seem to have misguided loyalities. [/b]</blockquote>
I agree, our Mercedes ML has had its share of problem, but with a brand new factory and first year of production they can't get eveything perfect. I have had excellent dealer service till just recently when my usual dealer stopped giving loaners forcing us to another dealer. I said mbenz rules because of their commitment to the safest vehicles on the road. The only reason we purchased the ML was because of its safety features. In 1999, I dare you to find another SUV with 4wheel ETS, ESP, side airbags, and all the luxury features of a mercedes. I doubt you could find it paying around 40K. I feel the ML is a great vehicle, mercedes just had some problems with US part suppliers. That is the problem that needs to be corrected. BTW, BMWs aren't as trouble free as you would like to believe. Shall I start on the problems with the X5(new vehicle, first attempt consumer suv, sounds like something mercedes did in 98)? If you dislike mercedes so much, you can always give your cars to me. I heard they are having tons of problems with the new 745i(according to some people i know at the local BMW store), so good luck with that!

You really are stuck on Mercedes. Let see how stuck you are. You are willing to take these vehicles off my hand then I challenge you to buy them from me. If these vehicles are that great you naturally will have no problem with this. I guarantee the best price. Understand the vehicles are sold AS IS. I assume no LIABILITY for these most wonderful vehicles. Put your wallet were your mouth is. I would suspect that you won't. If that is the case then DON'T pass your misplaced loyalty on others. I own them and willing to say I made a mistake. The poor excuse that this is the first year for the vehicle and first year for the factory is pitiful. If Mercedes can't build quality then they need to get out of the business. Also until you own the vehicle that you are so willing to criticize, I would suggest that you stop. The only thing you acheive is to show others the envy you have in wanting them. I own a 745i and do not find problems with it yet. I do not have an X5. When I get one I will be happy to let you know of any problems.

I'll be happy with just a Corolla S...but with the cash you are looking into investing into a car, one of the Saleen or Rouch Mustangs look tempting, a 650R Viper, but all these American cars have their issues on longevity and re-sale value. I think a well cared for car will last a life time.

If I had the choice between a BMW 745iL, a M5, a MB S500, a MB CLK55 AMG, a Lexus LS430 or a Lexus SC430........I'll go with..the MB CLK55 AMG.

M5 for me. Ahhh, isn't it nice to dream.:p

M5 for me too... but on those gloomy, rainy days that demand a slushbox, I'll be happy with a E55 AMG too! Just get rid of that ESP...

Well I am sorry to upset you. We actually own an ML320 so I can attest to that. However if I had enough cash to purchase the S-class trust me I would. But being 19 and in college, I am very happy that I could afford a brand new Lexus. We can't all have loads of money.

Im sorry to hear of your problems with MB. As an MB owner and my family owning several, I love the brand and find them to be some of the finest and safest cars on the road.

However, I see that you post on mbworld as well and I quote "As an owner of a 98 ML 320 99 RX 300 and 02 X5." I find it very interesting that here you say you dont have an X5. On mbworld you say you do have an X5. Here your ml is a 99, there it is a 98.
So...Whatever...
Im Not Gonna Waist My Time Or Energy On Flames..

I feel I do need to clarify the X5. As I mentioned here I don't own an X5. I agree that the post is misleading. I do own the RX and ML. The X5 has been a vehicle we have used from the dealership during times when our vehicles have needed service and maintanence. The sentence should have read. I own a ML and RX 300 and have experience with an X5. I also guess that somewhere there was question as to the year of the ML. The ML is a 98 and not a 99. Also you may have noticed the mistyped BMW 550. It should be 750. So you are right. I do not have an X5. I guess I was trying to convey the fact that I have driven one several times and have had experience with them. I suppose it would be nice to think that someone would lie over something as silly as a vehicle rather than understand the point made about the vehicles. I have not been able to find the misprint on the ML from 98 to 99. I am sure it is there so again the ML is a 98 and not a 99.

As Stated Before...Im Not Gonna Waist My Time On Flames
Good luck

Hey Al Boston, wake up and realize that BMW is a much better car than MBenz. I have 3 BMWs and they are all superior to any MB that i have ever driven. My brother has a '00 MB ML430, and i'm quite frankly not impressed by it's "superior MB quality". Reliability hasn't been up to par, and i'm not that much of a MB fan. I've seen so many MB's driving around making squeaking and rattling sounds as they drive over bumps-unbelievable

Be pleasant guys. If this is going to turn into a flame thread then it is going to be closed. The next flame post is going to do it. :nono

BMW and mercedes, while being in the same class, ie luxury, are vastly different automobiles.

BMW is regarded by many to be a "drivers" car while mercedes is more of an all out luxury.

This is shown through BMWs use of manual transmissions in their cars, while all but 1 or 2 Mercedes are automatics.

BMWs also allow you to feel connected to the car, while Mercedes feel as if you are disconnected, absorbing every bump in the road etc.

Don't get me wrong, I like Mercedes cars, but when it comes down to it, a certain type of person will go for the BMW, while another type will go for the Mercedes.

I actually like vehicles on both sides of the fence. :D

More on what jademonkey said. It's not just that BMW is more of a driver's car and MB are luxury cars (I personally think this), it's just that at the prices most of the higher end cars command, it's all down to personal preference. I was in a career class a few years back, and there were some well-to-do immigrants taking the class trying to figure where they want to work and invest, and one person said that a BMW driver will always drive BMW's and MB drivers will always prefer MB's. The kicker to this is that it was an older tiny Oriental woman who said this! So there will never be a resolution to this discussion, and I don't think there should be. Everyone should drive whatever turns their crank, instead of your car is junk and mine is so much better.

I'm a huge BMW fan and when it comes to the more normal cars we see everyday that are under 100K, I would take BMW over MBZ anyday. However, the MBZ sl class has got to be one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen. If I was 'John Ross rich', I would probably fill my showroom with more MBZ's than BMW's. But alas, I'm just a lowly 3-series driver hoping to move up to the 5-series & eventually the 7 series.

I love the new 7 series look. But I don't think I could ever shell out that kind of dough and get an automatic. I love to drive manual transmissions. An automatic would ruin the driving experience for me. It would feel like a mini-van. So I would have to stop at a 540i. That 6 speed is SWEET!

Lol! Intermezzo, check out the new 2003 CLK, I think that will change your mind about not liking MBenz interiors.
