Need to Remove my Tint...it Finally Happened to me.

I got pulled over this morning and was given a 10-day warning about my tinted windows. So now I need to take it off of the front windows. How do I go about doing this myself, or can I do it myself?

velobard - Not likely that we'll see any warm, sunny weather in the next 10 days. We're supposed to see highs in the 20s most of the time. But thanks for the helpful link.

I think I'll try using my steamer and Meg's APC instead of straight ammonia. The Meg's contains ammonia so I hope it'll be adequate. I'll just drive it for a while and crank the heat to hopefully soften the tint, and then pull it into the garage for the rest of the work.

I also recently had to remove my front tint . Didn't have to use a heat gun or ammonia, and to my surprise the thing peeled off very nicely. I found that if I peeled the film back to forth it left very little glue residue, much less than when peeled off top -> down. AG Glass Polish took the remaining glue off nicely. 30 minutes for the whole job. The tint was Sun-Gard, if that makes any difference.

no heat necessary....

just get a razor blade and some windex or something with ammonia. pull back a corner and start spraying the amonia product. use the razor blade to scrape the window as you go, always keeping the windex flowing...works like a charm and the front two windows can be done in a matter of 30 minutes...

or take it to a window place and pay them the 90 bucks to have it done (liability of scratching the window)

or dont take it off if you werent cited, wait til next time when you are going to be given a fix it ticket anyway....if they ever stop you again....

Honestly, I would leave them on...I don't know how paranoid you are but I had tint on my WRX for the three years I owned it, got 3 tickets...2 times I was in places I shouldn't be and they were doing their hardest to give me some kind of ticket and they...the last time was totally random.

Moral of my story, if you like tinted windows and you don't drive like a moron you shouldn't really have to worry about tickets...and if you do get one, then just pay the ticket or get a receipt saying you did and bring it to the precinct, its a fix-it...no points.

While this isn't a citation, it will turn into a citation if I don't "fix it" within 10 days. My guess is that the ticket would be more than the cost of re-tinting the front windows.

You also might want to look into second infractions for the same thing. The cost may be automatic and higher for second and third violations.

I won't get 20% on the front again. Although I REALLY don't like the look of different tint levels on the front vs rear, I intend to have the fronts retinted at 35%.

More research has indicated that the ticket for "window tint violation" assesses 2 demerit points too. I was considering the idea of just paying the ticket instead of removing the tint, but I think I've changed my mind.

What are you saying? That if you remove the tint you don't have to pay a fine, or you can just go pay the fine (and get the demerits, whatever they are in this context), and risk getting pulled over again? That was really nice of the cop, IMO, to give you the op to just remove without getting gigged for anything, if that's the case. I don't think we have anything procedurally here that would allow that, the cop either lets you go, or you get a ticket which includes a fine.

The options are these:

1) Remove the front tint within 10 days and take the car to the police station to prove that the vehicle is now in compliance with the tint law.

2) Ignore the 10-day warning, and receive a ticket for the violation. Pay the ticket and leave the tint on, but risk being pulled over again, at which time the fine may be higher, as SpoiledMan suggested may be the case.

I have gone through this. I got a fix-it ticket and i had 2 choices.

A) Remove it and they drop the fine

B) Keep it and pay the fine

No points though, just a fine.

I know alot of cops do lie to people to get them to remove it. Telling them they will get points and a fine if they dont remove it etc etc.

Always call the court to see what your options are.

How can they legally give you points on your license for your tint being too dark? Points are added to show that you have been a bad driver or w/e, not that your windows are too dark. Im so glad I live in a state that doesnt care about these things.

That doesn't make sense to me either. It's not a moving violation. I saw it on a webpage that showed the laws for each state, and it mentioned two demerit points for the ticket.

Find glass cleaner with ammonia in it. Spray very liberally on the tint to be removed. Place garbage bags or other plastic over the tint. The garbage bags will stick to the glass cleaner on the tint. Try and cover the entire area you want to remove. Let the ammonia in the glass cleaner dissolve the glue for as long as possible. It may be necessary to re-spray the tint. Remove the bags and start peeling off the tint. Plastic razor blades help with this process. Keep the GC handy for any glue that has not softened. This process takes some paitience, however, it works well and allows you to remove the tint in one piece or several large pieces.
