Need a replacement for TAW.

I really don't use TAW all *that* often, but when I do there never seems to be anything on the shelf that I'd want to try instead (though I'd like to know about any cheaper equivalents too).



For the initial clean up of a customer's car, I'd probably lean towards the alkaline step of a decon. system.



For wheelwells (on beaters), I use EFHI, and it never seems to have a detrimental effect on the painted surfaces..but I dunno if I'd like to wash a car with it either. I used to use TAW for the wheelwells/undercarraige, but that got a bit pricey.

That's it *exactly*. P21S really hit the proverbial nail with TAW. The Autoglym product looks close, but it's as expensive as TAW. I'm really hoping that the Surf City stuff will work. Oh, and maybe that Chemical Guy's Grime Reaper?
 
I have the SCG product, but was wondering how people are using it on the whole car? The sprayer it comes with is one of those "sniper-sprayers". Do you dilute it and use a misting sprayer?

I do..



i put it in a 2 gallon pump sprayer....
 
I've found CWC to do a pretty decent job but pretty soon I think I'll be trying Majestic Solutions Super Green Stuff diluted to see if that works for me. I'm tired of spending so much on an APC with TAW.

The product is very thick. I could not get it to spray thru their provided spray head. Even mixed down 50:50 with water, it's still quite thick. This product is almost jelly-like, similar to P21S gel wheel cleaner, w/long dwell time, etc.





I'm curious as to what level people are diluting this. I've never cut it beyond 50%.
 
I have the surf city grime stuff cut 1:1 and find it very easy to spray. I use it mostly for bugs and tar, but I wouldn't see why you couldn't use it for a lot of other things. It works awesome!.
 
3oz of CG CWClear and 2oz of CG Strong Wash in 2 gal of water has been working great for me. It strips sealants with no problem. Sqeaky clean paint surface afterwards. Seems plenty strong to me. I haven't used any TAW in over a year (too much $) so I can't remember how strong it was.
 
Keep in mind that the S100 version is slightly less strong than the TAW. You'll never notice the difference in most cases though...just on the really heavy stuff. Having said that, I buy the large container of S100 and use that on tires, wheel wells, door jambs, engine compartments, etc, etc.



I also use CGWC at paint prep ratio (2oz/gal I believe) before polishing. If I need to wash the car again after clay or compounding or polishing, I use the same ratio with a foam gun. I think it does a great job of stripping everything off. For a maintenance wash I'll use CWG.

Greg Nichols and I used the bike wash for the first time on a Ferrari we did a few weeks ago, and I couldn't tell the difference between it and TAW. Bummer that it's not as strong. I've always thought TAW was just right.



I use TAW and CW&G pretty much the same was as you.
 
I have found that TAW/TCC excels on paint. For other areas (engine, wells, wheels, trim, etc.) I use Megs APC or CWG/C.



A cheap option for paint prep pre/post polishing is Silicone Remover Its a 1:1 ration and a gallon is 12.95. Also mentions it works as a pad cleaner.

The prices are excellent. Not to mention it looks like a nice sale over there. I just ordered a few things including the prep wash.



Ive been through a 5L of the TCC and only really like it for paint prep. For an APC I feel there are better alternatives (price and performance).
 
I read through the post briefly and do not recall anyone mentioning Optimum power clean--safe for paint, high dilution ration, etc. What about Meguiars safe Degreaser?



If you were local to me I could show you what we use--it's about $37.50 for a five gallon container, safe for paint, strips fillers right out, and you can use it on *anything* on the vehcile. We dilute it 4:1. ;)



I purchase that through a local supplier--no website.
 
now this is why I love Autopia so much. I have little value to add to this thread other than what has been said about SCGS, but I've only used it as a spot cleaner for bugs, tar etc. Never dilluted it but it's a good idea. The stuff is really thick.



I wanted the S100 stuff but was still close to $50 for the big jug at the Harley shop.

OK, now that High Temp stuff you linked to looks very nice. That's probably as close to a TAW substitute as you can get. Well, besides the Surf City stuff. At the recommended 1:1 strength, that's two gallons of cleaner for 13 bucks. And it does pads, too. Yup, gonna get some of this.
