My 'Virgin' Trip To India w/Pictures

I manage an IT Development Team in Philadelphia for a Global Publishing Company. We outsourced some of our development functions to India.

Earlier this year I made a trip to India, and it was a big culture shock! You had to be VERY careful around water and could not eat anything that may have been rinsed in water: Fruit, uncooked vegetables, ice, etc… You had to brush your teeth with bottled water, and I actually taped my mouth shut in the shower because of have a habit of rinsing my mouth out (yea, I know TMI). I packed a small suitcase with food, Jack Daniels, and Diet Coke J Our hotel in New Delhi was located ~ 15 miles from the office. The commute to/from the office could take anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours. There were virtually no traffic laws –goats, cows, people, mopeds, cars, bikes, carts, etc… would line up in as many lanes as you could fit on the road and they would position for ‘inches’. The first 2 days I had to stare at the floorboards because I was positive that I would die in a car accident.

Fortunately I traveled with another development manager (Steve) who is based in the UK. Steve writes for a few European magazines on the side, and has excellent photography skills. Here are a few of the shots captured during our trip to New Delhi and Bangalore. Enjoy J

That isn't water, it's polished marble.

That must have been an awsome trip. My dad used to travel to India for work and I remember the first time hearing some stories and seeing pictures I was shocked. It really shows us how lucky we are to live in developed ations (I think that's the pc term right now) but I hope you had a good trip thanks for the amazing pics

Great pics thanks for sharing and the polished marble looks like water....how was the food???

The food was surprisingly good, but I tried to take it in moderation because I didn't want to get sick. Steve (who took these pictures) got very ill on the 2nd day of the trip. He could not eat solid food for 2 weeks due to a severe bacteria infection in his stomach. He almost had to extend his stay, because he was too ill to travel. I'm not a big fan of Indian food in the US, and found it much different 'in country'. In New Delhi, meat was the main ingredient in most dishes (lamb, goat, chicken). In the South -Bangalore, cooked vegetables were the center piece. Curie leached out of my pores for about a week :)

Here's another shot of the reflecting pool. I was JK about the polished marble :) The white stone structure is marble.

Thanks for sharing the pics of your vacation.
John Miller ?

Not vacation Joe :) I had to visit our off shore development center. I don't think I'd pick India for a vacation spot. You must have me mixed up with another John Miller :)

Man, my bad Joe. Sorry about that. I am John Miller, as it's stated in my signature.

I am working on a call center in Dubai for JPMChase. No plans on a trip though. I'd really like to go, especially on someone else's dime!

They are definitely nice pictures!! Thanks for sharing.

Although beautiful these United States is all I care to see as a tourist. I would travel if it were in my job description. Although I am not a manager of anything. The only thing I manage.... is to get out of bed to be a dirt head. Not much chance of traveling there. LOL!!

That brings back a lot of memories for me. John and I were in India at nearly the same time. While he was there for business, I traveled to attend a friend's wedding. We compared notes when we got back and found that we had very similar experiences. We both saw a lot of spectacular sights and many really horrific ones too.

Since this is an automotive site, I'll share some of my photos of the local transportation choices. Besides the usual planes, trains, and automobiles, I had the opportunity to try some rather unorthodox methods of transportation too.

The elephants are used to transport visitors to a fort at the top of a hill. It's a looooooong way up from the parking lot to the fort.
