Most recognized guitarist !!!!

There are plenty of great guitarists out there.

But I think it was ones that would be recognizeable if people saw them, not whether how good or fast they are.

Keith Richards is pretty recognizable as well.

Keith Richards is pretty recognizable as well.

then the two I'd pick are

Jimi Hendrix & Gene Simmons :rockon if you saw either of them on a poster ..like in my room 30 years ago :D you'd know who they are ;)

Doesn't take an amp to be awesome. Check out Andy McKee. I think he has a couple of videos on YouTube. He does some unique things and has some very good songs.

Yngwie Malmstein is pretty fast. :)

Wasn't the point that I was making...Les Paul was attributed to the invention of the electric guitar...and recognizable because of it...Jango Rinehart was also a acoustic player very fast and only had 3.5 finger on his playing hand

If i saw Les Paul on a poster, I'd say "who's that" ... you're missing the point of the thread

now BB King with Lucielle I'd recognize , Johnny Cash, yes, Elvis, yes ... Les Paul ..:hmmm: NO

That's just you Steve:D:D:D...l noticed that all you listed where from your generation or there about.

I listen to a very wide variety music;)

...name two guitarists, who basically anyone could name. someone even non musical people would know.
...

IMO, the following are very visually distinguisable...

O Jimmy Hendrix - the hair, and his face is frozen in time due to his early demise.
O Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) - the beard - granted he might be confused with Dusty Hill
O Stevie Ray Vaughn - the hat

I would argue that neither Clapton or Page would qualify as both have undergone rather significant changes in their appearance (haven't we all) over the course of their careers. If the pictures from the early 60s say from the Yardbirds I'm guessing that a number of people would have no clue.

I don't think Elvis even qualifies as a "guitarist".

I did forget Paul McCartney/John Lennon/George Harrison. Paul would probably number one on the list of most recognizable.

Throw in Bono from U2.

I would consider elvis a guitarist, how many times have you seen shows where he was playing ... true he is a vocalist, but also a guitarist

I never saw him live, so I can't say. I can't even remember him playing much in the concert/movie That's The Way It Is. I might consider Elvis a "strummer" but not a "picker" and certainly not a guitarist in the vein of those mentioned in this thread.

Adding another name to the list...Those who lived in the '70s might have watched Hee-Haw and therefore might recognize Roy Clark. Though a younger generation that doesn't follow music probably wouldn't recognize him.

Im not in to country music, but i will say one thing Roy Clark Would be one of the best to just set and listen to :violin:

Gene Simmons and Johnny Cash would seem most recognizable to me. Although Chet was known as Mr. Guitar, I don't think he'd be as well known to the "world" or to more than a couple generations, and even in those generations, mostly lovers of country music (even though he played other genres). And as to Slash, Bono, Hendrix, etc... ask people that don't listen to rock if they know who they are. I doubt it. Ask someone if they've ever heard of Johnny Cash or Gene (or even show a picture of Kiss) and I would expect you'd get a much higher percent recognition regardless of the person's musical preference.
