This was a question on another forum.

here is a poll/question for everyone. name two guitarists, who basically anyone could name. someone even non musical people would know. say for instance, if you posted a picture of santa claus and asked, "who is this". 90% of the world would know.

who would you pick?

James

I'f say for sure Hendrix and Clampton as the most recognizable.

I'd take Chuck Berry and Joe Walsh or Stevie Ray Vaughan though.

Def Hendrix...I think everyone will agree with that.

I'd agree with all the names listed above.

I'd have to add BB King to the list, he's has a very recognizable look and playing style; and has been around forever.

All the players mentioned above are true great guitarist, people who have greatly advanced the craft/art of playing guitar.

But really #2 would probably to belong to a "guitarist" such as...Lennon or Elvis. They may not have blown anyone away with their chops, but they are guitarist.

BB King, and Carlos Santana.

Stevie Ray Vaghaun, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Jeff Healy, Eric Clapton and Eddy Van-Halen are all up there as well, but my favoties are above.

If you ask about the most famous guitar , Lucile

Jimmy Hendrix - the hair

Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) - the beard - granted he might be confused with Dusty Hill

Stevie Ray Vaughn - the hat

Both Clapton and Page have undergone rather significant changes in their appearance (haven't we all) over the course of their careers.

Pete Townsend - Unless the photo was of him mid-windmill pose I don't think he would be that recognizable.

David Gilmour - Long time fan (since the '70s) of Pink Floyd myself, and I doubt I could pick him out of a line up today.

McCartney has been mentioned. I think many people could easily recognize him.

Very few people would know or recognize who Joe Satriani is. He is my #1 personal favorite guitarist, but his is definitely a niche audience.

I guess I have to go with Hendrix and Clapton, too.

I thought I might be able to make a case for Chuck Berry because of his duck walk, but I called my son who loves music and he immediately nixed the idea. I also like the suggestion of B. B. King, but I doubt he has the name recognition that either Hendrix or Clapton enjoys.

What about George Harrison?
