Might as well pack it in with competition like this

By no means am I a pro detailer like the masters on this site but like Dan said people only look at price and not quality. I like other people on this site whether doing 1 car or a 1000 I am going o give it all I got in order to perfect it to the best of my ability. When will people realize quality comes at price a worthy price none the less.

Good work's not cheap,,,,cheap work's not good.

I always liked that.

Heard that on DetailCity, back in the day.

Here's the problem.

I agree that good work isn't cheap, but how is the average customer supposed to know that he or she is indeed getting good work? Plenty of hacks will charge a price similar to real professionals.

Of course, we all know you can log onto this site and see the work of the professionals, but the average Joe doesn't know or care about this site.

This deals with any service, of course. High price doesn't always equal good work.

Last summer (2012) I met a guy who claimed to be a professional detailer. We started to talk about products and he told me what he uses.

He hand polishes the car. Waxes with Turtle Wax. Applies Armour All on tires, trim and the dash and cleans all windows with windex. I just walked away with a sick feeling in my stomach.

That right there is the perfect example why I hate it when people say I detail cars. For me it has such a negative connotation. Any Joe Blow who goes to Auto Zone picks up a $30 dollar orbital buffer, some cleaner wax, a pack of MF towels and Armor All thinks he "detail" cars. I hate that word.

I can't figure out what he is doing here:

• Entire car is hand washed and polished

• Complete wax with Turtle Wax Polishing Compound

• Another coat of Premium Turtle Wax Ice Shine is then used

• Car is machine buffed and hand shined

Nor do I think someone looking for a detailer on craigslist has high expectations anyway. Can't imagine they'd call us and spend $750 to fix a detail they were only willing to spend $89 on. :lol

Very sadly people who have no clue about detailing will fall for this over most high dollar details. They don't see the car under lights like we do, they don't see the work that we put into the cars that we do. They get some junk wash and wax and are happy with that. In the area I live in it's rare to find people who really want a proper detail and if they do, they are beyond shocked to find out the price.

Maybe I'm not so average after all. Sorry couldn't resist.

I have lurked here quite awhile and am thankful to all the pros and others that offer advise and that have helped me in the past.

I see it here at work where someone shows up in the parking lot and "details" 5 or 6 cars in a day for $100 or so a pop.

People think there getting a deal but they can't appreciate what goes into a paint correction.

Yes the car looks clean and shiny for at least a couple of washes but some of them still look they were washed with a scotch pad......

When I tell people what was involved in doing my cars they think I'm crazy.

But I'm still the one getting the compliments.

just my $.02

Thanks again

what we need to understand here is that the people that are getting this work done by this so called"detailer", they don't take care of their cars the way we do, they don't look at their cars the way we do. when the car gets beyond filthy then and only then do they feel compelled to either clean it themselves or have this guy do it, either way, considering the way they care for their cars, they have no where else to go but up. paint correction to them is a foreign term, they don't have a clue. so the 100 dollar detail is good enough for them.

Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with a "wash detail??." Not everyone needs or wants paint correction every time their car gets washed. As long as these people, the turtle wax guy excluded, are giving the cars a good wash and getting it clean enough, properly, then by no means is there a need to bash the guy that's doing 5-6 washes a day. (Of course the vast majority of them aren't doing it properly.)

The fact is if they don't call it a "detail" then nobody is going to pay for it. And I guess to me a detail doesn't have to involve paint correction, even on a minor scale. If he's taking the time to do door jambs, wheels, wheel wells, exhaust and all the other things that are overlooked by these people when they go to the coin op then he's providing them a valuable service and deserves some sort of respect. After all, how do you know he's not doing these ones on some days and full proper paint correction on other days.

Granted, a vast majority of these people don't fit the criteria I just described... And come to think of it if it were a proper detail even without paint correction I don't think 5-6 in a day is reasonable lol.

Hey I just started detailing some friends cars on the side, I'm honest and tell them I basically have the tools to do a nice job on the interior and basically I throw in a "free" two bucket method car wash. For this I charge 50 to 60 bucks, again no exterior...Eventually, as I gain the skills and proper supplies I can do more, but hey I'm a 24 year old accountant, this is something I have a passion for and is a great side hobby which keeps me out of trouble. What should I do, when I run-out of co-workers/friends and I want to create a craiglist ad, without offending the detailing gods? I'm not trying to steal out of anyone's pocket, I know my limitations, I'm very slow :) but do an extremely thorough interior job. I like reading your posts in the background here, so I would respect your opinion, I don't want to be harangued or embarrassed by putting up a cl ad and seeing my side "hobby" posted here...
