Microfiber towel Usage & Organization

I was wondering what you guy's and gal's do . I have 10 MF's I use mostly to buff off polish and wax that I've applied with my PC. Is it okay to use the same one for both buffing off polish and wax? Or should I use one MF for polish and one for wax? I was even thinking of labeling them with a "P" or a "W" on the corner. Do you wash them after each use or do you use them multiple times? What are your thoughts on the subject?

I have the same type of questions...

I would assume there are some MF's that will stay dirty (such as for cleaning wheels) that you wouldn't want to use on your paint. Or similarly a MF you normally use to remove wax might not be good for cleaning glass.

What's the best way to store and more impotantly wash all these together yet keep different ones for different uses exclusively.

~One mans opinion / observation~

I usually wash the towels once they are used (my volume of towels isn’t that great though). I used to use Microfiber towels and could buy by them in different colours and colour code them (yellow for glass, blue for wax and green for polish) but now I only use 100% cotton towels (Alpine DF)

~Hope this helps~

justadumbarchitect * so i question everything*

I split my MF towels into a few groups and base them more or less by color. Green towels are used on the paint. This includes buffing off polishes and waxes. Blue towels are for interior and tire duty due to the protectants used there. I use a separate glass towel that is easily differentiated. I wash them in separate loads to avoid cross-contamination.

Although, I just got some of the yellow Autofiber towels They seem softer than the green ones I typically use, so they might make their way into my exterior pile.

There are many, many threads on the subject of inquiry. Please perform a search.

Good luck

elcopan: The towels should be washed after every use.

Thanks for the link. I have an additional question though that's been bugging me.

Let's say I use 4 MF's, that are for different uses, over a weekend. So if you are suppose to wash them all separate, but wash them soon after use as well, are people running their washing machine with only a couple MF's in it???

I don't hear much about hand washing MF's?

For me, it usually takes a couple weeks to get enough dirty MF's to justify even 1 load of laundry in the washer, let alone a different load for each type of MF. Am I missing something here?

i wash all my mf together. if i detail i have probably 6 mf towels, one being a WW towel. it makes for a small load on the washer setting. you can definetly hand wash towels, just fill a clean bucket up with warm water and some laundry detergent and give them a good hand wash. with drying, i always hang dry my towels because i usaully use dryer sheets for my clothes and i dont want any residue from the inside of the dryer getting on the towels.

Top container has my good towels. Or the ones I use exclusively on cars I wash. The middle container has the towels I use on friends and families cars. They are all good towels I just don't want someone accidently ruining one of my preferred towels:( .

The cloth hamper holds the towels to be washed:xyxthumbs . I only use them once and wash them all together. I use only liquid Dreft with a pinch of Oxy Clean thrown in. I have some MF's I bought from YoSteve back in early in 02 that are holding up great. Others that I bought from JtIternational in May 02 are holding up just as well.

i have 4 categories.

tire/ultra dirty cleaning small towels

medium quality small towels

high quality small towels

high quality large towels

i just fold them and put them in bags and wash em when im done.

Good thread...

Here's how I set mine apart:

- Wheels/Engine/Outer Edges Of Wheel Wells/Leather/Vinyl - Yellow MF's (Cosco). I just clean and reuse.

- Paint - White Megs MF's use for polishing/waxing

- I use a CBT or 100% Cotton Towel for QDing only

- Use a felt cloth for wood work only

I usually clean my MF's and towels together in the small load setting.

I use ww for drying, green mf's for windows, wheels, interior, blue mf's for paint. I wash them together, but SEPERATE from all other laundry, using liquid detergent.

I don't use mf's for heavy dirt and I don't use them as applicators, except for interior work like applying Poorboys Natural Look on the dash etc. If I get some mf's that are heavily laden with "stuff" then I wash them in the sink with Dawn and use them for that sort of heavy work in the future.

Keep it simple....one pile for paint, one pile for everything else...to start with.

This is a high quality MF, but have you noticed that it "folds over itself" from time to time when removing polish or wax? It happens to me alot so I don't use it anymore.

Turtle Wax 2 packs from Autozone are the way to go for me!!

So what I gather is wax residue getting on glass towels and small amounts of brake dust getting on drying towels while all these are in the washer is not a concern for most...this seems to go against some opinions I've read in the past but I prefer to wash together so I'm not running the washer 3 small loads a day just for MF!

Agreed I do occassionally get folding over on the edges and yes it can be annoying. Something I've found which helps is to start at the edge of a panel and remove the polish/wax from that edge. Then start going in a circular pattern and remove little chunks of wax/polish at a time. This reduces the resistance on the surface and helps prevent the folding over which occurs with these MF's. In the future I'll probably switch back to 100% cotton towels since IMO they're easier to use, just need to wear these MF's out first.:)

Here is my setup for towels. Seperate draws for:

Polish

Wax

Cleaning

Drying

Leather Applicators

Polish Applicators

Rubber dressing

Sponges

and a few more sundry categories

I then have the exact same draws (black), for the used towels/applicators.

This brought a tear to my eye. You should not disclose your location as this may become the Mecca of product organization. It's quite a step up from the four Wally World containers holding my premium mf's, doorjamb mf's, foam/mf apps, and ww towels.

My terry goes on the shelf, as it only sees heavy-duty action. No dust worries for the terry.
