Let me contribute to this thread. I have towels that I use to clean (S&W, spot QD, etc), towels that I use to final polish / wax buff off, and towels for the last buff or QD. Then I have a lot others for general use, as inside cleaning, window cleaning, etc. Usually cotton towels go to wheels, engine bay and other dirty jobs.
I have about 60 high quality towels and maybe 20 regular ones, so, I can wash them no more than once a week (or two details).
Some (wax buff and/or QD) I wash by hand on hot soapy watter while other (clean/polish buff) I wash on the washing machine. I rinse them all together on the washing machine.
Here's my last wash from Saturday's detail:
