Method of attack on non-clearcoated finishes

Hello All,

What would be the preferred method of attack on non-clearcoated finishes.

From what i've researched, it is suggested to use a cleaner like DACP or SFP to remove the oxidation. What would be preferred after the cleaner? Is there a non-clearcoat polish and wax that is preferred? Would VM/CMW combo be OK? How about VM/S100 combo? I can use Z-3 but i'm looking for other suggestions. :)

I will be doing my cousin's '68 Mustang convertible in a couple of weeks and i'm pretty sure it doesn't have a good clearcoat on it. The paint is in decent shape and doesn't look oxidized, just doesn't have a good clearcoat.

Thanks in advance.

I have a few ss cars, and I don't really treat them very differently from my b/c vehicles.

Note: I dunno about your "good clearcoat" comments, it's either single-stage or clearcoated. Good or not, if it's clearcoated, that's what you have. But assuming it's ss:

If you have HEAVY oxidation, I'd use something like Meg's #2 (besides being abrasive, it has a strong chemical cleaner) FIRST, otherwise, I'd just clay first as with b/c paint. Sounds like you'd just clay first in this case.

*IMP*, the product selection for the abrasive polishing step is actually LESS critical than with b/c in that you can use ss-specific polishes like #2 OR b/c polishes like the DACP/SFP. Unless I'm dealing with a lot of oxidation (which doesn't happen if you take care of the vehicle, BTW), *I* just use my old stand-bys like 3M PI-III RC and MG (pns 05933 and 05937). Or 1Z polishes. Or your Meg's stuff if that's what you like.

I've tried VM + P21s and while I like Souveran better (on that car), it worked fine. VM works well on ss paint.

Accumulator, Thanks for the reply.

In reference to my "good clearcoat" comment, I am honestly not sure if it "had" a clearcoat previously on and was removed by the previous owner by negligence or it's just single stage. I will truly find out when I start applying polish. If the paint transfers onto the applicator then it's SS. Sorry for the confusion.

I'll have to order some VM/CMW/S100 :)

Heh heh, if he stripped off the clear you'll know it, because it'll look like crap no matter what you do ;) And that would result in paint transfer too, but ANYHOW...yeah, that combo should work fine once you get the paint in pretty good shape. The VM *IS* very mild though, so don't expect it to do a lot of paint correction.

IMO no need to order both the CMW and S100. Both are so similar that it just doesn't seem necessary to me. For my money, I would get S100 though.

Thanks for the tip!! That'll save me $18.00. :)

Since registering on autopia i've been seeing and reading about awesome results with both CMW and S100. I didn't know they were very similar.

Long long should I expect S100 last versus CMW?

Thanks in advance.

stangclassic66- I'll muddy the waters even more ;)

*I* would consider Meg's #16 (Pro paste wax). It looks VERY similar to S100/P21S but lasts a LOT longer. I really like it, especially on ss paint. One can will (literally) last for years.

S100/P21S never lasts all that long for me. *I* would say it's more of a beauty wax than something really durable. Sorry, haven't tried CMW....

I haven't tried #16, but I have heard very good things about it though. I would agree though that S100 is a beauty wax and durability is about 3 weeks.
