Meguiars #81 Fans

Hi all, I decided to try completing a detail without my favorite polish and use #81 in its place on a customer car. I found this stuff a little finicky compared to my other polish and ran out of experimentation time so here's the question: If the car I am working on only needs a claybar, polish and wax, I usually polish with my Gem orbital and a cotton bonnet. Once the finish looks clean and the left over product dries I buff off with a MF bonnet

and then wax. The problem I found with #81 was that it was difficult to buff out. Perhaps I applied too much product? Once I was able to buff out the product (the test panel was the hood on a BMW) it looked perfect, no smearing, streaking and the finish was deep and glossy. Can anyone share their tips on how to use this great product?

Thanks!!

You may have had too much. 81 needs to be used thin as it's a glaze with lots of oils. Too heavy, it streaks, smears and is a PITA to remove.

You'll get much better results if applied thin.

My process is #83, #9, #81, #26 and #81 is definately the most difficult to remove. Maybe I should switch from #81 to VM? (I just hate the fact that it's a 32 oz container, I with Meguiar's had the #8* products in 16oz sizing...)

My technique for removing #81 and #7 is that I do a panel at a time then initially remove the skin with a 100% cotton terrycloth towel then buff the remaining residue with a MF.

Same, I just put it on really thin. Too much and you end up moving it around creating smears.

Great stuff if used via PC and wiped off!

The #81/VM combo is awesome for a wet look finish. Scottwax turned me on to it and I use it all the time on my show car. I am looking to pick up some MF bonnets for the PC so I am curious how this will work with the #81.

You mean you're using a dual-glaze method? What is actually accomplished applying one glaze over another? And you just leave it like that for shows, or do you add a wax over top?

Yes...I used VM before #81 since it has some light abrasives in it. I then topped with Pinnacle Souveran or S100.

Here are the results....
