M205 users--how are you finishing?

Lots of variables here, including how hard the paint is, machine, pad, and technique.

I find that on 90% of vehicles, finishing down with a flex and a *flat* red american buffing pad, meguiars 2.0 black finishing pad, or even a new oragnge pad is fairly easy.

With the flex, pc, etc what gmlack3a stated is very important--keep the pressure firm, don't let up at the end like you would with traditional polishes.

Also with 205 if you work it too long you will move out of its "window" and all of the abrasives/lubricants will be gone risking micromarring from the pad. This will really become apparent if the pad isn't cleaned well between panels because the dried polish on the edges will start to mar the paint once the lubricants are removed.

These are my findings on "unusual" paint systems--most paints will not be an issue IME.

How do you make a non-diminishing abrassive disappear?

Only on the softest paints do I have to follow #205 (rotary and Meguiars yellow polishing pad) with Ultrafina. However, I usually do anyway because of the depth UF adds along with added insurance it give for a rotary swirl free finish.
I'm with you Scott...takes more time, but Utrafina is my one and only jeweling polish.

This might not be a bad thread to repeat my caveats regarding all the residual oils that M205 leaves behind. Those can factor in with regard to the final finishing and how you want to approach it.

Best finishing polish I've used, but needed a super-soft foam pad and low RPM to get it 100% perfect on black. However, even with a less-than-optimal pad, it finished better than any other polish I've used with a rotary.

Almost zero dust, too.

Hard to believe it's only $27/quart.

I got mine for $19.59 from DI's sale! :woohoo:

BTW Scott, on a Menzerna scale.. what do you think Ultrafina would number. A 1 maybe?

I haven't used Menzerna recently and never with a rotary. I have used 106 and 085 with a PC and Cyclo but that was a while back so I really don't know how UF compares to the current Menzerna formulations.

I haven't used either with a rotary, but I have used both by Flex. I'd say UF has about the same cut and gloss as PO106FF. Tons easier to work with.

Solely based on the amount of pigment transfer I got on my pads, I'd have to say UF has less cut than FPII and PO85RD. My car is red with a tinted clear and using the same pads on the rotary, I see more pigment transfer with those two Menzerna polishes than I do UF.

Huh, less cut than FPII...that's saying something!

Solely based on the amount of pigment transfer I saw to the pad on one car and one paint type...nothing more.

UF is definitely not as aggressive as 106ff though.

Yeah, I did consider that the transfer might not tell the whole tale, but still...it's a clue.

Clue to what?

Clue about how the cuts of the FPII and UF compare. Sorry, didn't mean to be inscrutable :o More pigment transfer might not be 100% conclusive, but it shows that, at least in that case, something "more" was going on.

LOL. Gotcha! :D

I bought the FPII hoping it would finish out better than PO85RD on my PITA soft Acura paint, but really didn't notice a difference between them...so my experience with PFII has been limited to my own car, but I was under the impression from the charts I've seen that they have pretty much the same cut on most paints.

UF is also the only finishing polish that I have been able to use with the rotary on my car...all others suffer from the dreaded "sticky paint".

I have to disagree, based on my experiences, that UF has less cut than FPII. From what I've seen, FPII does almost nothing to swirls on medium hardness paint. UF seems to cut a bit less than PO106FF, and finishes better, but it is similar. I'd say UF is much closer to PO106FF than FPII, though. Keep in mind, this is Flex + black CCS pads.

Have you used the 3M Perfect-it Swirl Remover (3M-06064)? IMO that is more like M205 and 106ff.

Got my M205 in the mail today (thank to Detailed Image's sale), but the way it is pouring rain in SoCal, I don't know when I will get the chance to use it!
