Looking to buy a rotary

I am in the market for a rotary, pads to go with and polish. I have come to find the limitations of my PC. I am just not satisfied with the paint correction results and the time involved. I am looking for the next step. I have used a rotary in the past, a dewalt something, with a few 3m pads and finesse it, on a few of my fathers semi trucks. I didnt like how big the pads were nor the feel of them working. The pads felt cheap. They worked for what I was tring to accomplish though. I am looking for a pad that is smaller than 7 inches.. and an easy to use polish.. Any help with this would be great!

The dewalt 849 is a nice machine but a tad heavy. also have the flex line to choose from, then you can last but not least look at the Makita 9227C. look for 6 inch pads and a backing plate also . Most all of the detailing places on line sell a kit you can purchase.

Harbor freight has a nice 5" backing plate made from stiff foam rubber. You can put on a 6" pad and that combo seems to work plus I can still slip over a 6 wool bonnet from my random orbital for heavier correction.

do a search and you'll find many threads on this topic. BTW... the makita, dewalt, flex, hitachi, etc., all have their fair share of followers/users...

the makita is available at home depot for about 186, as compared to 200 + shipping from the different vendors.

I think you mean the 9227cy is 189 at HD. I looked at the tech specs and the c and the cy seem to be just marginally different. Anyone know if there are big differences?

anything after the numbers 9227, are the accessories included. same machine...

Look at HD's website at the specs for both machines. It says that the 9227c weighs 9lbs and the 9227cy weighs 6.6lbs.

if you notice, one has a bale handle while the other has a side handle and wool pad. other than that, i don't think there is a difference...

Seriously, Im not trying to argue with you, but almost 3lbs difference is a big difference, right?

it could be a bag or something that is included and/or the accessories as mentioned, look at the weight between both as copied from the makita website. also, HD could have the wrong info as well...

I don't know about the others but I just added another Makita from Coastal Tool and the kit includes the side handle and the bail handle. Your choice of which to use. By the way, if I didn't know better the included pads remind me of my 3M pads.

The included pads aren't bad at all. They're very plush, keeps cool and cuts well.

The Ebay seller also includes those items and a pad centering cylinder which works.

I don't seem to hear much about this one and a local tool place has them for about $150 (probably reman's). The RPM range doesn't seem as functional as others, though.

Thanks,

Randy

the only complaint that i have heard is that some don't like that it starts at 1000rpm's...
