Leading The Way!

Ralphie: Adults loved to say things like that but kids knew better. We knew darn well it was always better not to get caught.

Been doing some reading, Hillary (Bernie too) has talked about college education being free under her administration. Folks, we all know someone pays for this. The latest article I looked at suggested that families with incomes below $85K would be eligible for free state school tuition and that this number would work its way up to families earning as much as $125K in the not too distant future.

While considering this, this thought blew through my mind, what exactly does this mean to me, personally? Well... in esscence it means that I scrimped and saved, scrutinizing every dollar I`ve spent over my adult life. It means I gave up or dramatically downsized family vacations. It means I never owned a brand new car until this past year. It means I worked long hours sacrificing time I could have spent with my kids. It means I put hobbies I would have loved to develped on hold. It means that my wife and I put off building our dream hold for a decade longer than we might have otherwise. All this while literally giving up a large chunk of my own physical health. We did this in order to put my 3 children through college with zero debt upon their graduation. I believe that this is still a worthy and desireable goal.

Lest this post simply look like another guy complaing about things, I consider our family to have been extremely blessed and in the blink of an eye I would do it all again with that goal in mind. Living with no debt is an incredible feeling and something I hope my kids understand well.

Now to the other side of this post. Should Hillary win the election and to a larger degree than I do at the present time. I`ll get to do it all over again for a bunch of other peoples kids so that their families won`t have to go through the same things I did to get their kids through college with zero debt upon graduation. Leading the way and only in America, go figure. :)

But it`s free.......... And they also want to refi or forgive outstanding debt

We are not leading the way by a long shot.

Germany, France, Norway, Greece, Finland, and other countries already have "free" higher education.

Now, with that said. I do not mean to demean you or your post and I can respect what you did for your children. My family didn`t raise a cent for me to go to college and that is one of the reasons I joined the military.

I 100% agree with tuition free higher education. It`s an odd statement to say really since I feel that there is way too heavy of an emphasis on college today. That would take me forever to type on a phone though so I`ll leave it at that for now.

Please understand that my kids also did their part in this. All of them worked from the time they entered High School and all 3 had the grades to get some type of scholarship assistance, no all expense paid full rides. As far as you joining the military, I salute you. You in essence paid for your schooling. My point with the above post was simply to say that it costs the people more in taxes to offer "free" education and that seems to be what is continually overlooked as a political talking point. Now if every kid wanted to sign up for military service in order to get their schooling, I`ll just shut up.

In my opinion, every person that wants to pursue higher education along with the costs associated should have some skin in the game.

That being said, the cost of education with the help of gov. backed loans that can`t be defaulted on is out of control

IMHO, this is America, and we are supposed to be free.

The government needs to stay out of education, health care, and the like.

If your kid can`t afford to go to college, doesn`t want to take loans, or got a degree in weaving baskets and now has no marketable skill to pay back his loan - that is NOT my problem.

America thrived before the government started stepping in and trying to regulate and federalize the well being of its citizens (and their multiple offsprings) through income redistribution.

Unless you have professors willing to teach for free - kids need to pay to go to college.

Can`t afford it?

Become a plumber.

What can I tell you. The world is not fair, was never fair, and will never be fair. Some people will work really hard to go to college - and some people just don`t want it bad enough. There will always be rich people, poor people, smart people, and stupid people.

Please don`t use my earned dollars to pay to educate someone else.

I couldn`t care less what they are doing in Norway... When did America want to pattern itself after countries in Europe? We LEFT that place, and they started patterning themselves after us - based on our success.

When peeps say France or whatever former monarch ruled land is doing this or that, why would I give a sheet as an American???

Folks, I messed up while trying to both Like and Thank the above post. The cell shifted and I hit Swanic`s dislike button. This was unintentional and I can`t take it back. I`m sorry.

Only have to pay attention to what the next President of the United States is sayin, not Hilary.

Before I decide whether or not I`d like to delve into this post or not I`ll start with something a little safer.

First, me expressing that my parents did not save for their kids college was not a cry for attention nor was it a complaint. It was not me complaining that the world is unfair and none of this was intended to be construed from my post. It was intended to reinforce and illuminate the fact that I really do appreciate and respect those people that do save for their children`s future. Do I wish mine had? Yes. They didn`t though so I made my own way.

Second, I was not trying to make a point of following other countries; that they do it right; or anything of that nature. GearHead said we were "leading the way and only in America" and it`s not true. It`s that simple. It was not intended to be condescending, insulting, or misconstrued. I simply was informing GearHead that we weren`t the first since, by his post, it did not appear that he knew.

Now, GearHead, I understand. The fact that you tried is what I enjoy. I`m not saying that my parents are/were the worst parents in the world (not by a long shot) but I never really felt a strong bond with my family. I won`t lie and part of why I enjoy/hate seeing people speak of their relationships with their families or what they did for their kids is because I never really experienced it. Whether it`s $1,000 or $100,000 you made an attempt. You invested more in their lives than "giving them life" and you did what you could to make their futures, and their children`s futures, better. Plus, one of my longest friends is a trust fund baby. He has very little appreciation for anything he owns, money, or the fact that he blew his chance at Baylor. I don`t know that I would ever want to give my kids a full-ride anyway (well, if I ever had kids).

I rethought this. I had it typed but I think it`s for the best to leave it be. I think what I`ve said should be enough.

We all have our opinions and our reasons for believing that, I`ll just let that be.

Ahhh... that makes sense. RDKC, the "Leading the Way" part of my comment was simply reiterating the title of this thread. It was initially started with regard to Hillary`s leading the way into the future, like it or not. That statement, as poorly as I may have used it, was not indicating that America was out in front in education practices. It was not meant to imply that my actions were noble, nor that the actions of me or my children were an ensign for anyone else to follow. My point in posting what I had posted was simply to point out that I`d done something that for me was both hard and pricey but that I had chosen to do it and that if Hillary were to do as advertised I`d be doing it again whether I wanted to or not this time around.

Hope that adds a bit of clarification. In retrospect I can see how this might have come across as boasting, that wasn`t my intention, I was actually complaining. :)

Noting again that my wife and I taught at a State U...

IMO the *real* issue with "everybody going to college" isn`t whether it`s right for everybody or whether everybody oughta get it for free, but rather *whether the students who do go are adequately prepared and sufficiently committed for the experience to work out for them*.

I spent an *incredible* amount of time imparting knowledge/skills that I always assumed were a normal part of Middle School (let alone High School!) and convincing students that they had to *work* at their education. The stuff they didn`t know/ know how to do simply astounded me.

Check the Dropout Rates. More people going is an admirable goal, but only if they actually accomplish something. Otherwise it`s just another of those Wastes of Resources that I`m always ranting about.

That makes tooooo much sense. "Everybody deserves a free college education"........

I could not possibly agree more with this.
