Is my new PC damaged/defective??

Got a new PC7424 today and am a bit dissipointed.

When I gently shake the head of the tool I hear a fait but noticable click-click-click-click. When I grab the pad and make the orbiting motion (think karate kids wax-on-wax-off), I can make the same clicking sound when I reverse orbiting direction.

Sounds like the gear that causes the pad to orbit (not spin) has a bit of slop in it.

Make the tool shound cheap. Are all porter cable buffers like this or do I have a defect?

the old black and decker drill sound was a bit suprising as well.

try putting the handle on (or some bolts). the rattling you're hearing is probably the plastic blacking housing on the top of the PC which is naturally a little loose...

edit : where did you purchase it?

nope its not the plastic. Definately metal-metal and in the gears.

I can spin the pad freely with no sound (bearing are smooth) but when I orbit the pad by hand, it make a cluck cluck sound. I watched the counterweight when I did this a it moves ~ 1/32- 1/16" very small but clearly noticable movement and sound.

Could a few of you PC owners check your to se if it makes the same noise or if the gears are tight. Just grab the pad with the PC off mimick the orbital motions but hange directions every half orbit. Do you feal slop in the gearing between this and the motor?

i just pulled out the PC and while holding it with my right hand, i used the left and grabbed the backing plate and started to gyrate it in a circle fashion and you could hear the gears grinding tightly. have you used it, and does it have any affect on the performance?

not yet,

I wanted to verify that this one is not broken and needs to be returned before using it. I just tested it out in the house and was concernd about what I heard.

It's not really a sloppy loose sound but I was expecting no sound at all. This little click-click-click sound is something I'd expet from a harbor freight special not a Porter Cable.

If your PC has the same sound it might be OK. I hope more people chine in on this.

the easy test is to hold the OC wit hte pad side up (corde side down) and orbit the pad until the counterweight is towards the cord (bottom).

grab the PC in the middle (gray part) and give it a shake. when I do that I hear a click-click sound from the gears associated with the orbiting mechanism.

Thanks for the replies.
