Is clay as big a rip-off as it seems?

Frankly I'm glad Mothers sells it in a package. I've recommended this exact product to many people for the sole reason that it comes packaged with a lube and some wax. For novices (like my neighbor whom I just turned on to clay) the Mothers kit takes the guesswork out of the purchase.
I agree with this totally. They make nice Christmas gifts I think. :D

As for including Pre-wax Cleaner, I think that wouldn't be really helpful. If you have residue left over after using the kit (I've never had this problem) you should really be washing the car to remove it or do a better job of wiping it off. Pre-wax cleaner is not meant for "cleaning" paint anyway. I think the cleaner wax is a wise thing to put in a retail package because it has mild cleaners (abrasives), but protects the paint too. The competing clay kit from Meguiar's does not include any wax, requiring you to buy some, and the Auto Magic kit does include wax.

I bought Clay Magic online by itself, came in a nice little plastic box that snaps shut, and there's enough of it to last me years.

I've stopped even going into stores like Pepboys unless I need wiper blades. Online stores have everything, often for cheaper anyways...
