How much would insurance cost yearly to detail cars as a business?

or...how much do you pay for insurance yearly for your business and what does it cover?

I'm not going to be driving people's cars, it's just for washing and so forth. Incase they say I made a mistake and messed up their car.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Your best bet is to just call up some of your local insurance places and find out. It depends on a tons of different variables.

A garage keepers policy for the first year will probably run $2000 or more. With out any claims, it will drop down to $1500 or so the second year. A garage keepers policy basically covers you while a car is in your possession.

If you are doing it MOBILE, you WILL NOT need garage keepers insurance.

If you ARE NOT driving the customers' car, then you can get by with GENERAL LIABILITY.

I have a quote from State Farm. @ $1200 a year / $100 a month for a $500k Policy.

I went to my insurance company about a week ago to get a rough price. He couldnt find the code in his computer so he pulled out another detailers policy. The other detailer had a mobile business that did work for at least two dealerships in the area. He paid $550 a year for a few million in coverage, and equipment. My agent said for doing part time work out of my garage it would be about $200-$300 a year for $500,000 coverage. I know it isnt a firm price but I was just looking for a general number for now.

I got a $1,000,000 general liability from safeco for $500 a year...after getting several crazy quotes from other firms, I almost fainted when I got this quote!

SafeCo here too.

I go through one broker for business and personal policies.

Wow, yeah I could live with $500 per year, for 1 mil. in coverage!

Thanks for the input.

Companies that write policies to cover detailers is getting pretty thin these days. So if you find one get it, be thankful and keep it.

Personally I don't see how you guys can detail cars and NOT drive them to move them:nixweiss

this may sound like a stupid question, but are any of you covered for the paint itself? Like if you burn it or say you drop your buffer on the hood? :D

Thomas- The way I understand my policy, I am covered for pretty much anything while the car is in my possession. The exception is terrorism because I declined the coverage.

Buffer burns = covered

Jihad = not covered.

Got it. :up

I guess I'll just call SafeCo and see what they offer. That seems to be the widely held insurance these days.

In regards to driving the car to move it what I meant by that was not moving the car up and down a driveway, but rather picking up the car and taking it to wherever i need it to be. If i'm doing mobile detailing then I won't need to drive the car from A to B.

If I do need to drive a car I have a liability release form that the customers could sign if they wanted to. My partner thinks no one would ever sign it, but I think it would be fine. I'm not out to steal or crash people's cars I just want to clean them!! I think once the customer knows us and understands we're for real then I think they'll sign it. Plus I'm just doing this part time, out of my garage so I don't want to pay 3 grand a year for full coverage when there's no way I can afford that and it's not neccessary.

$500 is not bad at all for being mobile. I'll have to check into that.

Does anyone know or think that age makes a difference for this? We all know it's a huge difference in auto insurance. I'll only be 21, but would still like to get insurance for being mobile when I go full time.

I think how serious you are makes the most difference, considering you're going to be 21-so you are an adult.

I think if you portray to them that this is no joke to you. You should be treated fairly.

If only that was true in all circumstances. It bothers me to no end that some people treat me a certain way because I'm young. Just because I'm young doesn't mean I do what other kids my age do. Sry, I had to vent that, it bothers me to know end.
