Idiots at detail shop did a terrible job!

Wait..ur saying the shop that messed up the OP's car is owned by a member??

Why is that so hard to believe? If someone owns a detail shop, wouldn't it be logical that they took 5 seconds to type "car detailing" into google at some point in their lives and came across this website.

Fact is, the "hacks" are out there, and they are not completely oblivious. Plenty of them are on this forum, and others. They are all over the Click & brag's and the "Pro Details" section. Just because someone is a member of Autopia doesn't automatically make them a certified A-level detailer.

to the OP:

I'm going to infer from your original post that you didn't pay very much (if anything at all) for this service. And, you got what you paid for.

If you really think that you got swindled, then call your local chamber of commerce and/or better business bureau, file a complaint, and move on. Don't waste energy and stress trying to force someone to do 'their' job to 'your' standards.

If this board does refer you to an "Autopian Level Detailer" (whatever that means), make sure you research their work on the forums and see if their expertise matches your needs. Also, make sure you understand that "perfection" and "near-perfection" have different price tags.

I'm not arguing that...it's usually that someone goes to a hack and comes here and is able to get it fixed. In this case, I was first on the scene and suggested he find a member to fix the car...so I was rather chagrined to find that it was member that hacked it. It may not be obvious who all the hack members are, but there are certainly many members whose work is of known good quality.

SA - I agree with you. that's why I suggested the OP research whatever member is recommended to him and make sure that thier services match his needs.

But, I'm wondering about the other side of the story. I don't want to thread-jack, so I'll start a new thread on the subject.

The more worrying part is that a member of autopia just let it fly out in bad shape. Of course we haven't seen pictures (right? I dunno, i'm kinda sick right now so i'm not really too sure of anything). But just letting sub-par work go out and possibly even causing more issues is bad.

no the shop he went to to pick up the products.

wax works is a nice little shop, mostly CG products, but he has great prices, and is extremely friendly. My friends and I talked with him for a good hour.

How could a detailing shop do such work and still be in business?

I work at a dealership and they used to outsource 'details' on employees cars to some local shop. A couple of the people in my department had their cars done and they'd all come back with terrible swirl marks on them. But those same people would have them sent out to the same shop again once or twice a year. The hoods were just awful. I asked one guy why he kept paying them to mess up his car so bad. His reply "that is what a car looks like after it is detailed, that is just they way they end up". They really thought that it was how you could tell it had been polished....

And that right there is the problem in a nutshell. The word "detail" is such a nebulous term. It means different things to different people, and that's fine. One of the local scratch and shines here offers a full "detail" for 80 dollars. My most comparable "detail" costs about three times that and results in a much better final product. They're both details, though. No one is right or wrong. I think the cars they do look like crap, but they do a whale of business :nixweiss More power to them.

We got a little carried away here...

Just to clarify, the shop that detailed my car the first time is most probably not an Autopia member. Again, I didn't do my homework and let some dude and few of his amigos go to town on my car.

Exactly right. He was extremely cool and has a nice operation going. We talked for a good while and he showed me a Pebble Beach Lexus ES he was working on. Very similar case as mine, detail shop made the car shine but under the lamps it was another story. His side of the car looked great though. He knows his stuff. Not only that, he even offered to help show me how to use a PC if and when I buy one. So no complaints here.

i work at a dealership also and they charge $180 for a "detail" ,i've seen them in action, they wipe the interior and don't even polish out the shiny areas that are covered in streaks from the rags, they buff a car with a wool pad and thats only partially just on the hood, trunk and upper side panels, and they don't even finish them out with glaze or nothing like that ,it's ridiculous.
