I am officially in love with hot hatches

I have always been a hot hatch guy. Way back when I had a 91 GTI 2.0 16V that was fun as hell. I had a new TDI gold that was slow but it was a fun ride and a joy with fll torque at like 1900 RPM. I drove a Subaru Forester Turbo for 5 years and really enjoyed that for the speed and utility. I wanted a new STI but $$ prevented that. Now I have a Mazda speed 3. It usually take a couple of years to figure out if I like a car :) Shows promise however.

Heya frito, nice to see another MS3 owner. Come on over to Mazdaspeedforums.org if you haven't already.

Anyone heard anything about the new R20 GTI? Sounds sort of like an S3, 279hp out of the 2.0L turbo, and maybe AWD(i've heard reports confirming both ways). I can't imagine that it wouldn't be AWD, it'd be a tough sell based on having 60 more HP and that's all over the next GTI. Sounds like a cool car, and they should have all the info out in May at the 24hour Nurburgring race. Might be worth holding off on an R32 just to find out. It'll still suck that we don't get the S3. :(

To you MS3 guys: What's the deal on the next one? Still FWD and manual only?

I owned an '83 GTI (no, it wasn't the quickest car available), but I enjoyed every single moment of driving that car. A battery, the exhaust, a new set of Koni shocks, and a set of Pirelli P6 tires are all I replaced in 90,000 miles. The guy I sold it to bought another set of tires, replaced the brakes, and drove it for another 60.

I'm looking to replace my Focus ST this year, and even though I have thought about a BMW 128, I am wondering if it is worth the $8-9K more than a new GTI.

FWIW Jeremy Clarkson hated the BMW 1 series, but he was reviewing the the hatch version, not the coupe that we have to suffer through here in the US. He liked driving it, it was everything else he hated, the fact that to make it nice you have to spend a ton of money, the small space, etc. But then again we don't get the Focus ST here either (unless you count the SVT Focus which is damn near the same thing).

I wish we got the 135 hatchback. Especially if it was a sweet 3 door hatchback.

XRL,

The new Speed 3 looks to be an evolution of the current - not a drastic change. Same basic engine. Looks nice but the front end of the new Mazda 3 is a bit goofy.

I wish it shared more with the new Ford Focus in Europe :(

This is one of my favourites, caught the ad off a dealership. Why GM didn't make a Redline Astra like this I do not know, it would have been great.
