I am officially in love with hot hatches

God, was it that late when that car came out? Wasn't it like the fastest 0-60 car you could buy that year?

Nah, not even close. It just seemed like it because the thing was so much fun. Perfect example of how a slow car can be more fun than something that's much faster.

So True!

there are 2 types of fun...

1. Going very fast and burning the tires at every corner. :secret (under age 25)

it may not be a car that handles great, but who cares, all you need is the edge of the seat baby!!!!!!:woot2:

2. Feeling very connected with the car along with the road while enjoying such comfort and refinement while carving the corners with such joy. It may not be the fastest, but the connectivity just makes you want to drive further and further.

I dunno...I might have to dig down in my C/D and R&T piles (never happen) and look this up...remember this is when Corvettes were powered by that awful "Cross-Fire Injection" and the F-cars used a 305 version of that IIRC, and the hot Mustang was still that 2.3 turbo (before SVO). I dunno, I wasn't counting any "exotics" as Porsches were in the day...I just remember a "fast" car back in those dark days being one that could crack 10 seconds 0-60...

Seems to me the '81-'82 cold start and other emission regs knocked out any remaining powerplants that had any horsepower or in any heavy cars until port FI came in (to mainstream use) around '85. 'Course it's all getting a little hazy in my old age...

Ahhh crossfire injection... Those were scary days.

Let's not forget the Omni GLHS Turbo. I remember smoking the doors off of Chevelles, Camaros, and Mustangs.

I still remember the Porsche 928S4 being very fast

Setec Astronomy- I guess I don't think of anything I had as a young guy as having been all that exotic. Back when the GTI first came out I had a '78 928 5spd. that I had serviced at a Porsche/VW dealer and I can assure you that it was a whole lot quicker 0-60 than a GTI ;) Whole lot tougher to keep running right for some reason too

After dumping that 928 I had a F-body, and yeah that 305 was pretty weak. But it wasn't the crossfire on those, IIRC it was "tuned port injection" (at least on mine). And the engine-moniker decals came off the hood if you let your paintcleaner dwell on them too long. That car was such a lemon that the dealer bought it back.

rydawg- The 4-valve 928 came out later..forget which year but my first one was a uhm... '98. Now the *really* fun 928 was the 928GTS from the mid-'90s (last Porsche I owned was a horizon blue GTS with a 5 spd.).

Yeah, that GLHS was quite a little beast! My wife's fave driving instructor had one of those and he was a terror in it.

LOL...a 928 is pretty exotic any way you slice it in my book...and '78 of course was different than the early '80's (not that 928's weren't fast then too). Didn't that GLH come out as a result of the GTI, anyway? Maybe they never put the CFI engine into the F-bodies, as I recall that "TPI" engine wasn't bad at all...but coming out of a 928, I can see it seeming that way ;)

Setec Astronomy- Heh heh, early 928s quickly became very affordable...and for good reason, as I soon found out :o That was one car that only got better with each new model year.

Yeah, I too recall something about the GLH/GLHS/etc. being a direct response to the GTI.

rydawg- The 928 was one of those cars that are kinda tough to really have fun with on public roads, at least once you grow up a little. By the time you're having fun you're usually being irresponsible. The "connectivity" (good way to put it!) that's so nice in my Audi S8 was somehow boring in cars like the Porsche where I felt like I oughta be playing boy-racer all the time.

I have always been a hot hatch guy. Way back when I had a 91 GTI 2.0 16V that was fun as hell. I had a new TDI gold that was slow but it was a fun ride and a joy with fll torque at like 1900 RPM. I drove a Subaru Forester Turbo for 5 years and really enjoyed that for the speed and utility. I wanted a new STI but $$ prevented that. Now I have a Mazda speed 3. It usually take a couple of years to figure out if I like a car :) Shows promise however.

They put the CFI in the 82 and 84 Vette and 82/83 camaro/Firebird. It was a disaster.

The GLH/GLHS came out after the result of the GTI. Carol Shelby was working for Chrysler at the time and had to put his name on something.

GLH- Goes Like Hell

GLHS- Goes Like Hell Somemore

I owned an 87 Dodge Charger GLHS and it was very quick. They were dirt cheap too. I bought mine used with 20K on it for $2500.:grinno:

The GTI's were very quick, but they also did not weigh much neither. My friend and I could lift the rear off the ground.

Ry...how times have changed! I remember them being "Goes Like Heck". I worked with someone who had an earlier version of that Charger, perhaps an '84. I really liked them; IIRC they only came in that blue and silver color scheme...maybe red and silver too. I remember well ol' Shel and Lee cooking them up.

What a team they were.

They were black/silver, blue/silver, maroon/silver.

You remember the whole scheme, what Dodge had, Plymouth had to have the exact same.

Dodge Charger = Plymouth Duster, Plymouth Turismo

Dodge Omni = Plymouth Horizon

They also made the pick-up versions from the charger too, known as the Rampage. Just like the VW caddy and Subaru brat.

Here is a pic of the Charger GLHS.

Here is my Volvo MY08 C30. Custom built with 1 month wait. Pre-ordered it.

Mod with Evolve sway bar and Evolve ECU. 250HP and 280 Torque. Drive great and a draws attention on the road. This car is a sleeper.

It's funny, some reviews talk about the C30 having a lot of torque steer, others say it doesn't have any.

It sucks that it seems so few C30s came with cruise control, the wheel looks kinda odd without buttons on both side. Do they have flappy paddles?

I wish it were easier to find manual...

I hate auto.

I love the moose emblem.

It makes me think of other manufacturer's emblems...

If Ferrari uses a prancing horse,

Lamborghini a Bull,

I think Kia should be a Platypus.
