Hey grout sponge pusher

I didn't think anything of it besides that it is funny. I would have edited it as soon as someone said something about it but Setec Astronomy already quoted me on it.

Hey, I'm not complaining, just observing/questioning ;)

I have purposefully left this thread alone until after I use my LC Util-mitt. I must say though that after all of the praises going on here I will try it. I recently had to grout my bathroom so I had a couple of these sponges laying around. I never thought in my wildest dreams though, that I would use them for ONRing a car. Thanks I will try it out on my sisters beater first. She keeps it semi-clean.

Hi guys,

I have been thinking of using sponges because I feel that they rinse clean very well. If dirt/grime is still stuck on the sponge, a good squeeze will get it out.

Unfortunately, the town I live in don't seem to have grout sponges. I do find urethane car wash sponges with large pores to capture dirt in retail stores. I wonder if I can use them in place of a grout sponge?

I will try to post a picture of it once I hit 10th post :D

Count me into the grout sponge game.

I've just converted to ONR wash, one bucket/grit guard method. First wash was with a new sheepskin mitt, second ONR wash tried the whole microfiber towel method, third wash using grout sponge.

My car is currently sealed with werkstatt prime + AJT, and I'm really impressed with ONR.

Sheepskin was surprisingly my least favorite method...maybe it's because it was a brand new sheepskin, but it just turned dirty as can be. I've demoted that sheepskin mitt (only used once) to wheel duty.

I liked using the microfiber for the wash/dry. You could really feel what your doing...very tactile. I think i'm just too lazy to have to wash microfiber towels that often.

The grout sponge easily held enough solution, and rinsed clean as others have stated. I bought two at home depot on a whim while going for supplies for another project...glad i did.

I only wish I bought a gallon of ONR instead of my trial bottle size.

So...count me in as an ONR convert. No hose required for last 3 weeks, and only 3 gallons of water per wash....what's that....2 toilet flushes? ;)

By the way, are you guys using a regular plush microfiber for the drying process after washing a panel with ONR, or one of your waffle weaves?

Ps. I used an old pump dispensor from a shampoo bottle to dispense the ONR. For me its now 4 pumps = 1 capful. (12 pumps for 3 gals of water). quick and easy dispensor.

From a Scottwax post, I started using a Megs Super Terry for the first drying pass and a MF for the second. Works great.

I had used a WW before that, but I like the thicker nap of the terry and the MF.

Seems like a lot, but thinking about it I guess you would use at least 6 on a normal sized car. This would be a negative in terms of using ONR compared to a normal wash.

Ok ok ok..........I used one finally. It worked ok, but Im more comfortable using a sheepskin......I did end up with quite a bit (more then normal with a sheepskin) of water on the ground also. I also pretreated....

Just not sold guys! Back to my sheepskin, sorry!

Why are you sorry?

Summed up my feelings perfectly.

Aw Patrick, MythBusters just did a show proving you CAN teach an old dog new tricks and here you go and .....

Hey, I've tried everything from old t-shirts to mitts, schmitts and other sh!ts - 2 buck grout sponge for me.

BTW - just went to a CarQuest paint store and scored big on 3M compound, UltrafinaSE and a bunch of 3M pads- everything I wanted, now my wife is happy "her shopping" for me is over! I'm thinking about another cup of coffee , pecan pie and sitting fat and happy with the kids watching Hannah, beats work!

Guys, I used the Grout sponge last week and I must say I absolutely love it! it's very easy to rinse clean and It feels completely safe for the paint.

My question is more ONR related. Using a 2 bucket method, I started my wash on one half of the drivers windshield. I ended the wash with the second half of the drivers windshield. On the last half, I noticed dryed dirt spots on the windshield. THis means that the water is getting dirty towards the end of the wash and I'm applying this dirty water to my paint. Is this normal with ONR, or am I doing something wrong?

The groute sponge also had black spots which won't rinse clean. Is this also not good?

when i'm done using the GS, not only do i soak it in a bucket of clean water, but also massage it thoroughly under running water and squeeze as much of the water, soap solution, leftover dirt, etc, out before i lay it on the grit guard to dry (i also hold it by each end and swing out any of the remaining water). seems like within a few hours it's dry. check closely, you may have mold growing on yours...

Hi all,

I managed to take this pic of the sponge available here. It has big pores!

It is a urethane sponge and one of the features reads "Large pores capture dirt".

I used it once and it's so easy to clean the sponge from dirt. I just squeeze the sponge after each panel to rinse off dirt. My second bucket holds clean water and I will use the sponge to absorb the water and squeeze again to rinse off further dirt when needed.

I am in Canada. I went to my local Home Depot and picked up the QEP brand Super Sponge like many others have. However, mine says that it's made in the USA. Has anyone tried the USA made one or does it make a difference at all?

Quick question without reading this 20+ page thread. Do you slightly squeeze the sponge when you use ONR with it? Or do you just glide it over the surface and let the ONR do its job. I would tend to squeeze a little as the sponge would hold a lot of ONR inside and it might be a waste to put it back in the bucket?
