Help an amateur pick a polish/wax

I am new here. I have one white car and one black car, both in good shape. I have read a lot of these forum posts and am a little confused. My basic interpretation is that there is a lot of personal preference, but I think there are different expectations that I am not aware of. Maybe someone could help me out. Here are my priorities:

#1) I want something with good protection and good durability. I am not a car/paint/wax buff, but I want to take care of my car. I don't want to apply wax/polish more than 3 times a year, I would do 4x in a crunch. I wash my car every 1-3 weeks, depending on dirt/rain etc.

#2) I want something that is not going to kill me in the application and removal process. Something that goes on and comes off easily is good for me.

#3) Shine/look. Of course I want it to look nice, but this is less important than protection. If something is a little harder to apply/remove but gives noticably better results, I could reprioritize this item with #2.

4) Availability. Honestly, I will do research on the internet but I am not going to buy something online if something reasonably similar can be picked up at the corner store.

It looks like I might be looking at some polymer sealant followed by a wax. It seems like people like Klasse AIO and Mother's Synwax. Would these be good choices? And then some Meguair's wax? But which one? Deep Crystal, gold class or some numbered product? But I am really confused by all the choices, most of which aren't applicable to my situation, I assume.

Thanks for any guidance you can offer.

PS1. The Secret Decoder Ring is lacking a lot of entries!

PS2. I bought a bottle of Sprayway for my windows after reading about it here, and it's great stuff.

Dacali - Is that where you got yours? That's awesome! I never would have thought Advance would carry Collinite!

My recommendation for an easy to use product that lasts long would be Wolfgang sealant or UPP. Clean the paint first with AIO to make the sealant last longer.

I am also new to this but can recommend what I have found to work for me as an amateur. I am buying locally so I tried Mothers Synwax and really like it. Very easy to apply and buff and leaves a shiny finish. It is so easy to use that I find myself waxing the car much more often than needed. The Synwax spray wax can be used in between coats of wax if you plan on waxing 3x per year. You wipe on and wipe off. The whole car takes about 5 minutes.

Also, let me warn you that hanging around this forum is addicting. In the last three months I went from having Gold Class wax, OTC Zymol wax and Zymol car wash with a synthetic wool mitt to now having: Mothers Synwax FX wax and spray, Reflections, clay bar and QD, Powerpolish, Back to Black and Hotwheels (no longer made but found it cheap at big lots) as well as Meguiars #26, Scratch-X, Gold Class Shampoo and their pad kit for the PC I ended up buying. This does not include all the interior and wheel/tire supplies I have or the 15 MF towels and accesories.

None of the Advance Auto Parts stores around me have it. Their website listed one of them, but when I went to look, the didn't have any. I just ordered it online off their website.

most of the over the counter sealants are junk compared to the other stuff

you shoud try poorboys EX or EXP for the sealant.

for the polish try one of poorboys polishes like pro polish with carnuba, preferably with a PC

www.autogeek.net has the products

Finding something local that will last 4 months is going to be tough. Zaino would be an option I guess, but the look, ease of use (you have to mix it with another product), and cost (all compared to other products) are some of the negative issues I have with it. But since you seem to want durability, it may suit you well. Of course this is my own opinion, so do some research on it and see if it appeals to you.

Maybe a spray wax/sealant would be something that might interest you. Four Star UPPS or Optimum Spray Wax offer great durability, affordable pricing, excellent looks, and easy application. It is so easy that you could use it everytime you wash. Of course that isn't necessary, but you get the point! You won't be able to find these products locally, but Autogeek.net (with 10% discount by typing AUTOPIA in the coupon box) will carry both. It's a great site to window shop even if you don't intend to order anything.

If you can't find Collinite locally you can order it direct. If you don't like internet ordering you can just call them up, they're nice guys, friendly and very helpful. Here's a LINK

Since I have not tried poorboys sealant, how would you compare it to Mothers Reflections or Synwax FX? Does it look better or last longer or both? As far as durability, I can not comment on the Mothers sealants because they are so easy to use that I wax my car every month and use FX spray in between. As far as look goes, I find both of them excellent. I've also thought about ordering Klasse AIO, any opinions?

I would disagree. Mother's FX Synwax is very easy to use, gives a good look, and protects fairly well. Meguiar's consumer Cleaner Wax is a great wax that is also easy to use and has good durability. I would even put Deep Crystal Carnauba Wax on par with many carnaubas that i've tried from "boutique" vendors. All three of these waxes are available OTC and for decent prices.

Connell,

If you want a quick and easy way to have a smooth, glossy finish on your ride; pick up yourself a clay bar kit (Claymagic, Mother's and Meguiars are all available OTC), and either Mother's Cleaner Wax or Meguiar's Cleaner wax.

no, i'm not having a bad day

around 2004 alot of newbs came into autopia and started posting with alot of opinions and not much experience to back it up. ive used the otc stuff and the online stuff. they can both look decent and last ok. but side by side with proper prep the poorboys.klasse, zaino, etc always comes thru with a deeper shine and usually last longer

of couse whith this guy washing every 3 weeks it probably does not matter, it is probably all swirled anyway

i recommended the EX b/c it is basically idiot proof, otherwise zaino or klasse would have probably been a longer lasting choice
