Heavy swirl removal on a red Mustang GT *56K* ROFL

GOT PREP?
Saturday I had a fairly trashed 98 Z28 to detail, interior and exterior. Today, I had a detail that I could focus soley on the paintexterior only!!! I love these details as I find interiors to be “necessary evils.

The paint had moderate to severe swirls and marring and needed to be polished. The swirls were so numerous that it made the red paint look orange and dull.

I spent just under 7 hours correcting the paint. With the exception of a few tracers, the paint is perfect. I loved detailing this car and fell in love with the color, it is just gorgeous. This is my second time detailing for this customer and it has been great each time. While the cars have had swirls and marring, they are always very clean.

The process for the car was:

Wash

Clay with Meguiars aggressive clay bar

Dry

Tape moldings, remove antenna, etc

Compound with Meguiars #85 diamond cut via the rotary and a twisted wool pad @2000 RPM’s

Polish with Optimum polish via the rotary and Meguiars polishing pad @1400 RPM’s

Apply Meguiars #80 speed glaze via the PC with meguiars polishing pad @ speed 5

Apply two thin coats of Meguiars #21 by hand

All products removed by microfiber

AIO on trim

NXT glass cleaner on glass

Meguiars all-season dressing on tires

After:

NOTE: The #85/Op combo is an awesome 1-2 punch for heavy to moderate swirls, but be sure to remove the #85 section by sectionI forgot to do this and some of it “welded itself to the finish.

I have some marring Im planning on working on this week and plan on going with either OP...Love the stuff. Still deciding whether to use a polishing or finishing pad. Newho...The tires and wheels look great!! What did you use on the wheels, even the inner rim looks flawless! Great job!!

Excellent job as usual! I have a question though, you said it took 7 hours for the detail. I like using 21 as a sealant as well, but was told to wait 12 hours between coats. Have you found this unnecessary?

Thanks for the compliments guys. :)

For the wheels, I just used a citrus based degreaser 4:1, scrubbed with an EZdetail brush, wiped with a MF mitt, then rinsed. They were already fairly clean to begin with.

tdekany, I buy most of them locally through a dealer supply warehouse. Today I used the twisted wool pad that comes with the Makitta. :D

I apply two coats to ensure adequete coverage, I am not a "layerer." :)

IMO, two thin coats of#21 applied to properly prepped paint look as good and provide as good of protection as any thing on the market. No need for multiple "layers."

Awesome turnaround! I can't believe how nasty those hood swirls were and how excellent the hood looks in the after shots. :)
