GPS - Tom Tom vs Garmin

OK. I bought the supplies. I even got a buffer. However, procrastination got the better of me ...

This past weekend, I traded in my couch and went to work on the '85 Porsche. The PO left swirls all over it, so I knew there would be at least a bit of polishing involved.

First, I washed and dried it. Then I sprayed the tires with EF Black Opal. (No flames, please. I'm working my way up the learning curve here.) They look great; I knew they would since I've used it on my Explorer twice already.

Then I clayed it with some Meguires. I was surprised how much additional dirt came off. The car felt pretty smooth afterwards.

I polished it with some 3M product (Perfect It, I think) using the buffer and a foam cover. Damn, the car was really slick to the touch now. :up

Then it was Klasse A-I-O followed by SG, both buffer/terry combo. I intentionally used too much of each product. This was my first go 'round and I wanted to get the maximum benefits/protection. I left the SG on for about a half hour before wipe off. No problems.

Notes:

1. I washed and dried it outside, and did the rest of the steps inside a garage (about 70 degrees -- I love South Florida in January).

2. I burned out the inferior buffer after 3 hours of usage (name withheld by request of the manufacturer). It was a sale item in December at the hardware depot. Got the refund, but won't be back. I'll hold out for a PC (for $100 or so ... seen 'em offered).

3. I got some haze, but the car is drop-dead gorgeous. I'll be more likely to finish up the other requisite work.

4. Swirls are nearly all gone. Next time, I'll get them all.

5. I planned to finish it with some Meguire's carnauba, but ran out of time. Next week is soon enough.

No pix, but maybe when the project is done I'll post some.

PS: I also did some rehab on the interior with the Leatherique products. The Rejuvinator Oil did really soften up the leather, and the Prestine Clean made the all-leather interior look and smell great. (Too bad they can't spell their product names correctly -- no trademark then.)

I also live in S.FL... Miami! Woohoo!

Where do you live by?

send me a PM...

Good to see that you've had great results. Now try using 3 coats of Klasse SG and you will see an even better finish. Laters

Humidity?? If it's less than 90%, it's a dry day.

I'm in Tamarac, near the Tpke and Commercial -- only a minute away from the SPEEDZONE, A/K/A the amateur Grand Prix -- 0 to 100 in less time than it takes to tell.

The savings, ah yes, the savings ... They all go to the Porsche Repair Shoppe, of course.

However, been thinkin' about a Borla CatBack once Speedo is 'right'.

The next step is a weekend wash followed by some carnauba. I have Meguires for this go 'round, but ordered the 33% from Griot's for next month's product test.

Learning is such a b*tch. B^))

Let's get that Autopia meet happenin' !!!!

Before you apply your carnauba coat, make sure that you are totally pleased with the number of coats of Klasse SG that you have on. Once you apply the carnauba, there's really not much going back. You can't then apply Klasse SG over the carnauba coat. This is precisely why many of us say apply a minimum of 3 coats of Klasse SG. Each successive coat will make your car look nicer. Laters

A Florida Autopia meeting might work. Holly and I are off to Florida In Feb for a week, then back again in March.

How about a March Spring Madness meeting in Tampa???

Has anyone used both Tom Tom and Garmin recently?

I have a garmin 1450T which was one of the better units. My unit has had issues (freezing, not booting, sw getting messed up). They did have a mandatory firmware update and in the last two uses (do not run it daily) it seems to be acting better.

Complaints:
1. Routings. It never seems to take in account stop lights so it will route on streets with many lights over a highway (even if a mile or so longer). It will choose different routes at times over the same road

2. Map errors: It has some map errors on roads I drive . I reported these but from what I have heard they ignore user inputs. These are roads that have been this way since time began or changed a few years back. Everything I had reported was correct in googlemaps for sometime.

3. Addresses: On country roads, it will miss an address by several miles.

From reading various places on the net, some have said Tom Tom has greatly improved in the last few years (Garmin is dominant in US) so wondering if I should consider Tom Tom for my next GPS. Of course you hear more complaints on the net, but others have more problems than I with garmins.

I want a new one to use BT for phones connections but want smarter routing and more up to date maps plus reliable.

I did quite a bit of research before buying my GPS. It's amazing how one company can have so many models with varying features, yet some models are excellent and others are complete junk! And it seems to be the higher end models, in the case of Garmin, are the bad ones!

I had a TomTom, but it was the bottom-of-the-line model and I wasn't satisfied with the features. (Can't remember the model number)

Comparing all Garmin models for reliability and customer satisfaction, I ended up buying the Nuvi 765 model, which is an older one, but I couldn't find a review anywhere that was negative. Almost every reviewer gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

With the newest models, in the "1000" series, I read several negative reviews, mostly concerning lock-ups, non-boots and a general feeling of not trusting the unit.

So far, I've been very pleased with the performance of the 765. I've had it for a few months and used
it daily.

We have had both Garmin and Tom Tom. We settled on the Tom Tom. The only problem we had with the last one was a couple of times, on the shortest route, it took me on abandoned roads. Once in upstate NY it took me into someones backwoods junkyard with not too friendly German shepherds and another time in NH it took me up a road that turned into a four wheeler trail while I had a long trailer on to haul some 20.5 x 25 front end loader tires home for my loader. What a time I had finding a place to turn the trailer. With the newest one, bought this spring, we have had zero problems and we use it a lot. All were the better/more expensive models.

(Warning:) LOL.)
Your luck may be different than mine.

our tom tom is wonderful. every once and awhile it will lead us to a dirt road
one time it led us to a VW dealership in Cincinnati while looking for a place to eat (was this a sing from our gps) lol
